This and That

Gymnastike recently filmed the Caquatti working out in preparation for next week's National Championships.

Mirai Nagasu revealed her new music selections on Ice Network. As previously reported, her new short program is to 'The Witches of Eastwick' by John Williams (the McDonald's of composers). Just as the Chinese and Chinese-Americans all must skate to Yellow River Piano Concerto for at least one season, the Japanese and Japanese-Americans are quickly developing their own rite of passage. Mirai will skate to John Williams again for her free skate, this program being the music from "Memoirs of a Geisha." Given how fantastic Mirai can be when granting interviews, I simply cannot wait to hear her discuss what she is trying to portray on the ice. Perhaps Frank Carroll has a thing for turning his young Asian ladies into prostitutes? You know how sadistic the gays can be.

Claire Boyce spoke to Gymnastike about her recent coaching change. Given the reputation of GAGE, Anne is completely clueless when asking about the difference between the two gyms. It is interesting that Claire says they train much harder at Texas Dreams than at GAGE. As usual, Anne feeds her the answers she wants to hear.

Sam Shapiro is hoping to compete bars and beam at Nationals after hyperextending both knees at Classics. Alyssa Baumann suffered a slight back injury, but is still hoping to compete.

Nicole Bobek was sentenced today for her involvement in the NJ-NY crystal meth ring. The prosecutor reportedly sought 364 days in prison for Nicole. Her sentence has not yet been announced.

Lu Shanzhen told IG that Jiang Yuyuan is over her slump and better than ever. She recently scored a 59.350 at an Internal Test Event. It is unclear how the scores would stack up, but he is expecting her to perform well at the upcoming national championships. When we last saw Jiang Yuyuan in March, nagging injuries and a growth spurt made it appear that her strength to weight ratio was off and that her best days might have been behind her. This is great news for Margaret Thatcher's adopted daughter.

Voir recently appeared on ET Canada.

Amy Chow continues to live the life of supreme power Asian. She recently married orthopedic surgeon Jonathan Ho. Amy recently completed her residency and is looking to go into private practice in Northern California. A teaser of their wedding video can be viewed on vimeo.

Li Xiaopeng recently married Anna Li's BFF Angel Li , daughter of Li Xiaoping, an Olympic Teammate of Li Yuejiu and 1981 World Pommel Horse Champion. Anna Li served as the maid of honor. Watch the adorable wedding music video. The couple will reside in the States. They also held a reception in Beijing.

The University of Auburn coaching position will be announced in a matter of days. Interviews were recently conducted with the four finalists, including Danna Durante, Bryan Raschilla, Jeff Garba and Randy Lane. Speculation leads one to believe that they'll go with Durante in order to have a female head coach.

Blahtah simply shouldn't be allowed to do floor exercise. Their choreography is always just a big 'ol mess. Kristina Baskett was the only gymnast who could rock the head/neck isolation moves that she did in the corners before her tumbling passes. Ms. Baskett has been choreographing and now has Corrie Lothrop doing it, just no. Also, notice how just like Blahtah's 2006-2007 incoming freshmen class, it is obvious that a pool is needed to determine which girl will blimp out the most by the first meet of the season. Like my sister's new English Bulldog, they collectively look to be gaining two pounds a week.

  1. On the collegegymfans blog it is reported Assistant coach Jeff Garba from Utah Utes has been named the new Auburn coach...maybe this isn't verified anywhere..

  2. Oh, he was the fourth. I was blanking on the name. Many people were thinking it would be Danna. They completed the interviews the other day and are expected to release a statement soon.

  3. yeah, that choreography is full of recycled moves from Baskett routines that only Baskett should be doing, but hey it could be worse. I'm really getting tired of that Moulin Rouge tango music though. Its a lovely song, but with so much tango music out there, I can't believe so many gymnasts are using it.

  4. Tango de Roxanne needs to go on the banned list of Skatenastics music.

  5. I could not agree further re: Claire Boyce. I too was suprised #1 that Anne didn't know that she was at GAGE, or at least didn't try to get some info out about it. Ehh what can you expect from Anne the clueless?
Also I saw the Utah vids and thought, that is choreo? Yet again, another fail from Utah. He'll get those people in that arena but that is nothing worth getting excited about. No joke.

  6. I'd never try to get a young kid to discuss leaving GAGE... it is just awkward and uncomfortable for them.

  7. Li Xiopeng is marrying Li Xioping's daughter? Is that a typo, or is the one letter e/i make all the difference?

  8. Even with it being Utah who is boring as can be, those videos still make me look forward to NCAA season. Aunt Joyce, any chance we may get a very early look/analysis of the top contenders (UCLA, UF, Bama, UGA, OU, Utah, Stan)? I'm going through NCAA withdrawal lol!

  10. I'm actually stoked about Mirai doing Memoirs of a Geisha. I really liked what she did with Carmena and I have high hopes.

  11. I was never an NCAA fan until last season, but I got into it because it sucks so much to watch elite anymore.

  12. I can't believe they gave Corrie Nichole Ford's music- Nichole performed that routine 10 times better than Corrie ever could!

  13. "i've been a gymnastics fan since the mid 80s and can't can't CAN'T get into NCAA gymnastics."

<------Me too, except in the past two years I realised that all of the current teams in elite (okay, except for maybe three) are sloppy, big and booty shaking, and the music for floor is just as trashy in both nowadays. I've grown to appreciate NCAA just through TIVOing whatever is on television.

I am still a bigger fan of elite in general, but will say that the NCAA code leaves a lot of room for creativity when it comes to skills...on the other hand, most of the elite routines on everything tend to look exactly the fucking same, augh, make it stop. Watching all of the beam routines at 2003 Worlds was PAINFUL and I couldn't even look at floor.

I think I'll be watching even MORE NCAA now that they have instituted the no lunge rule on elite women's floor. WTF???? That looks terrible and it's not strictly safe for the wimminz, either.

  14. oh, and please God let the thing about Jiang Yuyuan be true. Rebecca Bross/Bridget Sloan sweeping 1-2 in the AA again gives me stomach ulcers. I know it is foreordained, but the mere thought that someone else could possibly kick one of them off the podium is good for my blood pressure.
