While one could debate that Katarina Witt deserved to win the 1987 Worlds, it is absolutely insulting that Caryn lost the 5-4 split for the silver to Debi Thomas. It proves the power of politics, because Ms. Kadavy reigned supreme without having the US judge in her back pocket. Being on the same team as the new National Champion (Jill) and the reigning World Champion (Debi), our girl from Erie, Pennsylvania had to work for every ordinal.
Given the level of cheating that took place to get Liz Manley on the podium, I'm almost glad that Caryn got so sick in Calgary. I'd run a deathly fever too if I skated this short program and wasn't in first place (or even likely to medal) after be vastly superior to that Eurotrash.
As a pro, Caryn started coming into her own by capitalizing on Nancy Kerrigan's bad days at Pro-Ams. She then got really into gear during the skating boom and became positively heaven on ice. Ms. Kadavy started racking up Pro Titles (Canadian Pro, Ladies Pro Championship) and her programs became more and more orgasmic.
Caryn kicked off her win at the Canadian Pro with one of favorite classical pieces ever.
If that wasn't good enough, Ms. Kadavy earned a ticket to the World Pro and wasn't intimidated by Yamaguchi or the other A-Listers. This program is an Exceptional Gay Moment each and every viewing. If you're a skating fan and this program isn't on your top 10 list, your opinion is pretty much worth being written in sand. Mr. Jeremy Miranda likes to make fun of my middle-aged woman sensibilities and my love for Celine in particular (though he secretly shares it and is even familiar with her French albums.) I don't care, Caryn + My Fav Celine Song Ever = My Own Personal Titanic!
While we both love the same musical, Ms. Kadavy eventually learned to have some fun and tap into her sassy latina side.
Just because I know you're craving more Caryn (and Jill), links will be posted in the next 'This and That' once maintenance work is finished on mediafire. Youtube's tendency to suck the big one of the music companies has hindered our love of 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin' and 'Foolish Games.'
omg. the "its all coming back to me". wow. i used to make up programs to that when i was 12, however, it wasn't thought "appropriate" for a 12 year old to skate to (obvs). that literally made me D.I.E.
ReplyDeleteCeline power ballads are a guilty pleasure, especially if written by Jim "Why Won't It Ever End/Is The Song Over Yet?" Steinman. Kadavy's skate is golden. It makes me wonder, though--what if someone had the balls to skate to the song as Steinman originally conceptualized? I would pay good money to see "Heathcliff dancing with Catherine's corpse in the moonlight" on ice. :)
ReplyDeleteWho choreographed the Celine program?
ReplyDeleteLeAnn Miller
ReplyDeleteShe's from my hometown so I happen to know something about her. She is a great lady...she was always helping out the local clubs by donating stuff and skating for free in recitals and charity events. Never complained about signing tons of autographs. Very gracious.
ReplyDeleteI always figured it was probably because of her that SOI even bothered to stop in Erie, Pennsylvania.
the writing makes it seem like manley is eurotrash but how is that possible?
ReplyDeleteThe Celine program is one of my earliest skating memories!! I wanted to skate to that song so badly. hahaha. My relatives don't know that much about skating (some of them think there is a Nancy Kwan), but for some reason, if I mention Kadavy they know EXACTLY who she is. Weird.
ReplyDeletehe's talking about the short program... which katarina won.
ReplyDeleteI never understood how Thomas beat Kadavy in the LP at 1987 Worlds. It was mind boggling. If only Kadavy would have hit her final 3toe...
ReplyDeleteMy dear Aunt Joyce, can you please upload the It's all coming back to me now program? Youtube is being a bitch and the video is blocked in my country because of copyright. I NEED to watch this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a classy, beautiful skater. I appreciate that she kept her rump covered, too. All these old videos show how skating has changed for the worse. Let's have fewer triple and quadruple jumps and more split jumps, death drops and spins without five position changes!

ReplyDeleteAmen, Zach!
ReplyDeleteCK is an unheralded American treasure!- THANKS for this!
Really fun to see the difference between 87 to 88; even though it's comparing LP performance to SP, it's interesting to see the improvement in speed, combinations, etc. from 87 to 88 (and they were just fine in 87)!
I don't think Lys was spamming. It looks like blogger was having issues. The same thing happened in another spread.
