Thank God for McKayla

Thank God for McKayla Maroney.

The Fierce Five interview on Letterman was headed for a train wreck. Giggling girls plus awkward David meant squirming audience.

Thankfully, McKayla continually saved the day.

Elite gymnastics all too often presents us with sheltered, socially awkward and insecure robots who try their best, aim to hit their routines and cake on a plastic smile.

zzzzz......

Thankfully we all have McKayla to look to -- the only U.S. female gymnast of this Olympics to truly hold her own at such a young age.

  1. Wow....Maroney FTW!!!

Isn't it ironic that it is probably a great thing for Maroney to have sat her vault down and taken silver? She is gaining extreme amounts of fame for her"McKayla is Not Impressed" meme. I have seen several of the photos shared on FB. Friends of mine that didn't even watch the Olympics know who she is because of her silver medal face. None of this would have happened if she won gold.

She was such a delight to watch on Dave. She really did save the day for an otherwise snoozefest. She's sarcastically funny and witty. Such a JOY. She may not be as goofy as Sacramone is but McKayla can def. hold her own in interview sessions. She is absolutely gorgeous as well. She knows she is the shit and owns it!

Raisman wasn't as bad with her mile long sentences here, but you could see she was trying to compete with Maroney for the spotlight and lost.

Gabby was unusually quiet, as I suspect she is when she is with the other 4. When questions were directed to her, her answers were well enough and she looks great. I bet she has an easier time when she is solo interviewing. She needs to continue to smile, smile, smile. Work the Mary Lou realness hunty!! Are we going to see Douglas as the new face of Tampax?

Jordyn- Thank Podkopayeva that Clubfoot and Flying Squirrel relieved us of the possibility of Wieber having any chance at AA gold. She is so BORING!!!! She would have joined Patterson in that category, although Patterson was slightly more interesting. Slightly.
Also noticed she isn't wearing her boot....did she have a "miracle" and recover from her "broken leg"?

Kyla- she is a stunner and will only get more gorgeous in time. She is def. very much the Amy Chow of the group. Very quiet and shy. It plays well on her though and she comes off adorable as opposed to awkward.

My favorite moment was when Dave asked the girls what they do for fun and Maroney responded with "We eat Cornflakes" and Dave quipped "Someone's learned something" He clearly understood that Maroney was alluding to/ endorsing their Cornflakes cover. She did it so subtly too!

Mark my words she is going to make the most $$$ of any of the Fierce Five. (The name I believe Maroney actually first came up with)

    1. Jordyn is in a boot, not a cast. The only way to heal a stress fracture is by rest. You don't have to have the boot on 24/7, you can take it off for a little bit and be fine. Nice try though.

Too bad the girls didn't go on Fallon, that would have been infinitely less awkward than Perv David

    2. There is part of me that likes McKayla - and part of me that wants to write her off as a snotty little b*tch. Somehow I sense that she could be the Shayla Worley (albeit much more successful) of this post-Olympic cycle. In some situations her smirk rubs me the wrong way.

    3. I think Gabby is deliberately being low-key when she makes appearances with the other girls - to the point of over-doing it, perhaps. When you have things your peers covet, it can be ridiculously easy to get accused of being arrogant, uppity, and spotlight hogging - most especially when you're black. Regina Georga a.k.a. McKayla Maroney already looks like she is ready to put Gabby "in her place" any chance she gets. I have seen her and Aly Raisman exchange odd glances when Gabby is speaking. Perhaps Gabby's a threat to their rich-bitch sense of entitlement.

    4. Mckaya was cheering wildly for Gabby during the AA. There's a screencap of her tearing up when Gabby won. I don't think that was fake. I think that these girls truly like/root for each other.

    5. Anon 11:08 - well, I hope that is really the case. Not that McKayla or the rest have to worship Gabby - but lets hope that they are much nicer and more inclusive than Shayla Worley was rumored to be to Shawn Johnson, or Jamie Dantzscher was to Tasha Schwikert.

    6. re: Anon 10:59: Yes, Gabby's learning to navigate a treacherous tightrope. Although I hope she is innocent of the backlash that can befall black athletes for little-to-no reason (Lolo Jones being one of the latest victims).

Gabby doesn't have the same behavioral luxuries as, say, McKayla Bitching-On-The-Medal-Stand Maroney...

    7. Geez, why does everything have to be racial?
First of all, that was a two second snap shot and Mckayla clearly explained that she was just thinking "dang it"because she knew she screwed up. Second of all, everyone loves Gabby. She's undoubtedly a star. The stupid hair criticism came from a small number of women from her own race.

    8. So many creepy comments. I love writing off some girl that NONE OF US KNOW as Regina George, and accusations of racial agenda complete with I Will Put U in Yer Place. UGH. Reminder: WE DON'T KNOW THESE PEOPLE. All this overwrought speculation about who is "nice," who is putting whom in their place, past dramas involving past gymnasts, etc. is junior high and, frankly, pathetic. What is it about the internet that allows neckbeard queenie losers who haven't done anything more athletic than picking up their laundry to assume they can enter the mindset of a wordclass athlete who's just performed on the most famous stage i the world?

A lot of these repliers are creepy and weird--and I guarantee waaaaaaay over 16/17. Get. A. Life.

  2. The most awkward person in this interview is DAVID.

  3. She really did cary the show. It is amazing. it reminds me of interviews a while ago with Shawn and fat nastia. Nastia was like a cold fat boar. i guess fat nastia is smart but she seems like a dumbs. However Maroney is a crackup!

    1. 1. Go learn how to spell
      2. Find out the appropriate times to use a comma
      3. You capitalize people's names and at the beginning of a sentence
      4. Now you're ready to insult World and Olympic Champions!

      Delete
    2. Did you type that in a different language and then google translate it into English? I'll just assume you had a different disparaging adjective that was erroneously translated to fat...because my girl weighed like 90 pounds by the time they were doing post olympic interviews.

Nastia and Shawn both did well in their interviews but McKayla is playing on a different level. Girl is building a brand all by herself. Aly clearly has some wit as well, but she needs someone to play off of and McKayla is a star.

    3. I think that Gabby did well and shows a lot of personality. I think that Ross comes off as very cute, but lacking personality. I do think that nastia is fat. ps Annon 5:59, I did not really bother to capitalize nastias name, because I think she is a loser whore.

If someone had told me that Raisman would be a bigger star then Weiber, I would have been very surprised, however really in retrospect, the signs where there, She was hitting all year.

I felt bad at first when fat nastia did not make the team, but really where would they put her? Does anyone think she actually would have taken her for just bars and beam? Everyone else could at least hack through the all around.

    4. The thing that really has impressed me thus far is that the girls actually do seem to like each other, unlike in 2008 where the team was divided.

    5. The team was divided in 2008? Spill, please.

    6. Anon @ 7:21 - I can't at you picking "fat" and "loser" as insults for Nastia. Show a little more creativity if you're going to troll inside her shrine.

She's inarguably both thin and a winner. Try harder or go away. I only read the comments on here periodically and I can already pick you out among the many 'anonymous' by your terrible grammar.

    7. calm down, damn. how about you give us a lesson on your supreme mastery of the english language and composition skills and tell us what "I can't at you picking" means. that must be some new shit only genuises such as yourself say. show a little more creativity. if someone wants to describe someone else as fat and a loser they can and your permission is not needed. I can already pick out out among the many anonymous by the fact that your panties are clearly in a wad.

    8. Thanks for the invite but someone covered the basics upthread. "I can't" is pretty common internet speak... sorry if it confused you. Seems like you still caught the gist. Nice of you to defend free speech in the name of calling 110 pound Olympic champions fat loser whores. A worthy cause.

    9. Thought you only read the comments periodically. Guess not when you're scared somebody might say something that's not ok w/you. How dare others to not share your views! I can't at you determining what might be a worthy cause for me and what's not. Catch the gist? hehe. Oh crap, maybe I should try harder or go home. hahaaaaaa you crack me up, and thank you for caring so much. I love the kindness of strangers.

  4. People say all those "things" about Carly--and here I sit. Her Olympic win is my all-time favorite Olympic moment.

  8. Anyone else see the resemblance between McKayla and Tara Lipinski? I love em both, but Maroney has more chances at showbiz. Someone please make Aly go away now. Girl is trying to overcompensate for lacking a personality.

  9. She fascinates me because i have a feeling there could be scandals in the future. Girl is loving the fame and seems like trouble. I don't agree with celebrating her bratty behavior. But it is totally refreshing to see a gymnast with personality.

  10. Agree with anon @ 11:11. McKayla's bitchface is a funny meme. If Gabby had done it it would have had a whole different reaction. I loved Gabby's expressions while watching Dave. "Hairgate 2012" has taught her the realities of playing the fame game, I think. Not so sure this is a fuzzy warm group. I agree that the expressions were less than supportive while Dave questioned Gabby. Hope they aren't too cruel to each other, but having had a daughter who was a low-level competitive gymnast, I have seen that they can be pretty bitchy to each other. The higher the stakes, the bitchier they become.

    1. *eyeroll* Stop trying to start trouble. Your daughter's problems have nothing to do with this particular group of girls.

    2. *eyeroll* hello they said their daughter was a low level competitive gymnast. They never said their daughter was an Olympian. Pick your wedgie, it'll be OK my dear.

  11. I don't know what there is not to like about Mckayla. She is beautiful, a great gymnast, and has one dynamite personality. I remember when all the gymnasts seemed like Shannon Miller who, as much a she was a great gymnast, could barely speak to reporters she was so shy and even then with and odd squeaky voice. Also, I disagree with people who say Mckayla is mean or bitchy. She was always the one making the others on the Fierce Five feel good about themselves. She just likes to have fun and everybody around her benefits.
