Usually couldn't get the hype about Domnina & Shabalin, but this dance was fantastic. Every position hit cleanly and crisply and the styling was very believable.
But NO WAY should they have won the Olympics--there was very little skating in their OD and their free was generic and boring.
1:42 - Compulsories were set routines that every gymnast had to do. Yes, they were simpler with easier tricks, but emphasized form and technique. The compulsories comprised half their scores, the Optionals the other half. Optionals are where gymnasts can make up their own routines with high difficulty, choose their own music, play to their strengths, etc. Elites no longer compete compulsories; to the detriment of the sport, many people think. Form, technique and artistry have taken a back seat to difficulty at all costs.
I'm no gymnast, but even the collegiate girls are doing tricks more difficult than that. Why did they get rid of compulsories? Were they boring? Easy to cheat the system and get certain gymnasts into 1st place?
I'm obsessed with your blog! Ahhh :)
ReplyDeleteI think Meryl was shocked the Domina and Shabalin remained in 1st place. lol.
ReplyDeleteWhat is a compulsory? Those exercises look super easy.
ReplyDeleteThe compulsory vault was just ugly
ReplyDeletehave to disagree about the vault - it had some real hang time and beautiful form. Love it!
ReplyDeleteGood Friday!
ReplyDeleteDomnina and Shabalin were so good at the Tango Romantica!!! So so so good!! I wish they could have won the olympics.
ReplyDeleteThey couldn't win with his knees and their WTF? original dance.
ReplyDeleteWhere's the videos of Lilia Podkopayava!? She was amazing at compulsories.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Lilia's 1996 compulsory floor was lovely.
