This and That

Johnny Weir uploaded a triple axel and a snippet of his supposed short program.  If it feels a little 2008-2009 for you, it is because Johnny is getting in touch with his subconscious desire to be a third-rate Russian lady.  This music is Masha Butyrskaya's 2002 abomination to Tales of Wandering (aka Tales of a Journey) and he keeps all of those clanging bells.  I do believe the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.  That said, I always have a soft spot for serious Johnny channeling his inner Russian diva.

Universal Sports interviewed our girl Nastia Liukin.  They asked her nothing of interest, which allowed her to give her standard answers.  "It is great being back in the gym after a year and half off.  We will have to see where it takes me."  Um, if you're going to interview a Nastia or a Kwan, you need to be creative if you're going to get anything interesting out of them.  An interesting interview will result in more hits for your website too...   I'd have asked her, "Nastia, tell us about the reports of you training a layout jaegar from el grip in your bar routine.  Might you consider a new bar dismount?"  'What is the biggest struggle about being disciplined after living freely since Beijing?'  Will we get to see you and your dad argue in Russian again?  Can we beg NBC to give us subtitles?

By giving us the status quo, the interviewer is boring both the athlete and the viewer/reader.  I like that Ms. Liukin will be present at the American Cup to see Mustafina and get even more motivated to work her ass off the the gym.

Beth Tweddle is a beast on bars.  Here she is at a competition warming up for Europeans.

Michael Solonoski is getting in touch with his inner diva on Holiday On Ice.  My boy is still rocking pleather and sticking his ass out, but they are allowing him to drape flaming red fabric behind him like a gay from hell and have him showing off his bod like never before.  The serious student tended to be a bit reserved in competition, but his show persona is coming out.  Note how he steals all of the attention from the girl he is skating with and sets the women's lib movement back a good fifteen years.  Sadly, the DVD of Holiday On Ice doesn't give enough airtime to his  RuPaul's Drag race Eyebrows...inspired by Tasha Schwikert.

Tatiana Nabieva won bars and vault at Russian Nationals.  Viktoria Komova is still in the early stages of returning from injury and suffered falls on bars and beam in event finals.  She did whip out her back handspring+layout stepout+arabian on beam, but we likely won't be seeing it at the big meets unless she becomes miraculously consistent with it.  Anna Dementyeva won beam and was second on floor.

  1. AJ, they should let YOU interview Nastia!

  2. What kind of "holiday" lets you dress like a demon and skate around Satan's gaping vagina? I'm so confused...

  3. Oh god. I can't listen to Nastia talk. And what is with her hair? Christ. What a worthless interview (and talk about shitty video quality!).

  4. It is a Skype interview, Mister, which Universal Sports does in almost every sport. Once again, you are as negative as can be about absolutely everything. I think we need to find you a bottom.

  5. 'I do believe the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result'.

True but sad. The result is going to be as usual - Johnny's wuzrobbing, followed by a year long whining that will keep him in the 'news'. But at least his bots will have smth to talk about.

  6. At least, the definition of insanity is still interesting and precious enough for you to upload that tiny snippet of skating. Soft spot, indeed.

  7. Since Johnny and his team don't know how to max points then what they should do or should have done before the Olympis is a replica of Evan's programs LOL. If he would have done that then he could have beaten Evan at his own game. Of course I kid but maybe not...

  8. That "Holiday on Ice" thing celebrates what holiday exactly? Weirdddd.

At least Johnny is posting training videos rather than doing Holiday on Ice.. That's how I feel. He may complain and be annoying and dress like a freak, but he's still trying to skate into a third quadrennium (even if he doesn't, he's still trying), and that is very cool.

  9. Hey, Johnny's channel is only a few months old! Which prolly means he's serious about training for another Olympics. His Russo-fetish will come in handy, then, as Russia's bid to take over the world commences.

  10. Wish he still had the same flow out of his jumps as he did with Priscilla. His book indicated that the very first thing that Galina did was to deconstruct his jumps- sigh.

  11. I didn't say anything about Nastia's puffy face, did I? No.

  12. What if it's not the team's fault but rather Johnny's inability to skate more complex / up to date / interesting programs to a decent piece of music?

Maybe he would have loved to copy someone else's content, but just... can't do so?

  13. If he didn't like Galina's coaching style so much he could have found another coach.
Like always, he blames other people for unpleasant outcomes.

  14. @3:49, Johnny never blamed anyone on his current team for anything. He worships Galina. The poster is referring to a part in his book where he (in a very positive light) talks about Galina "fixing" his triple axel at one of their first practices. Which also made me cringe, since his 3A with Priscilla was gorrrgeous.

  15. Does "show skating" mean anything more than dressing like a skank?

  16. ok, nice triple axel Johnny. But he is not serious about competing again except maybe that will land his name in print again. That music is just awful. Those damm little bells.

  17. Oh well, it's fixed then. Good for him!

  18. I don't hate the music. It's typical Johnny Russian music, but I don't hate it,

  19. for whatever reason it makes me happy that johnny can still land a gorgeous triple axel and hasn't yet succumbed to the lonely and eternal triple toe as his only jump like most skaters who've been away from competition. some skaters keep up more triples but many don't seem to bother. maybe he should just do one more Cup of Russia and call it a day:)

  20. I really think it's a testament to how much of a natural skating talent Johnny has. He has been so busy lately, and his schedule has been consumed with fashion week. Every single day. He could not possible have had much time for skating at all in the last month between his book tour, media, and Fashion Week. Yet here he is as smooth as ever, throwing out triple axels like they're nothing. Ok... color me impressed.

  21. Johnny hasn't even done anything yet and already he's being accused of "doing the same thing." All these people attacking his character and showing themselves to be judgmental and negative. Try pragmatic. He may compete again; he may not. He was showing a 3A a couple of months ago, too. Wait and see, and judge him then. Maybe he'll have a different coach. Maybe he'll maximize points, like in 2007/08. He's won before; he could win again. No matter what, there will be beauty in his skating. I'm interested to see what he does next, on or off the ice. An interesting character, for sure, and I suspect much kinder and more sensitive than he gets credit for.

  22. btw, I thought that third-rate Russian lady reference was funny :)

  24. Stupid Johnny. If he would just learn how to WORK, have some discipline, and get routines that fit the current code.....Instead, he does things like pretty triple axels that make us all think he's legit for about 10 seconds before we realize he's, well, not.

    >.<

  25. What's even more impressive about Beth Tweddle's routine in that video is that she failed to do a single clean run-through during the warm-up period before the meet. During warm-up, she fell on her releases; she managed to mess up every connection. Then, when the pressure was on, suddenly she was flawless.

(Sadly, the same cannot be said for her floor routine at the same meet. But ah well, it's early in the season and all...)

  26. I was going to say that Johnny could do a Evan program because he use to have great program. I get why Johnny doesn't like the code system. I don't particularly like the code system but what could he be thinking when he's talking about winning Olympic gold. Did he think his program had the points but they just weren't giving it to him because they didn't like him?
