Live Blog: Event Finals Day 2

This is me pretending to care about still rings. Many of my friends aren't even awake or functioning yet, but they will be lighting up my phone during bar finals. The bar finals have a long history of hosting the feminine divas: He Kexin, Komova, Douglas, Tweddle...it is going to be a monstrous final.

Uschi Keszler thinks we should take bets like on the Kentucky Derby for bar finals. My money is on horse number 7!

Apparently Chen Yibing was a monster while I was showering the sin off.

Aleksandr Balandin- I wouldn't kick him out of bed, though he is not my favorite on the Russian team.

Matteo Morandi is into second. I love that they aren't even hoping for gold.

Jordan Silver Fox Jovtchev- incredible to see him competing here. One can tell that Shannon is a bit jealous that he made it to six Olympics. She is crazy enough to want to do the same. Almost touched his knee down on the dismount. Waves to the crowd.

An old friend says hello from London where he is a part of the Russian skating show.

Hello Tommy Ramos! I don't know much about rings beyond the Zoltan Magyar days, but I do notice that he has an arched lower back through much of the routine.

Denis Ablyazin- the strength in his core is stunning. Lovely controlled somersaults between the rings. Much better body position than Ramos. One step back on his double twisting double layout. Can he sneak in the medals again? Moves into fourth.

OMG hello Zanetti. Those are some serrrrious shoulders.

Good BBC Link

Zanetti upsets Chen Yibing...Oh My Shit.  Chen Yibing is being extremely gracious.

Wait, why are we seeing boxing? Don't make me go back to Shannon!

WTF is with all of these athletes not trying on purpose?!

They just said Beth Tweddle was made from the steeliest of nerves and I actually thought the British commentator said 'mares.' Wow.

This is the same British fluff as yesterday. I still don't believe Beth would be thrilled with bronze. We all saw Maroney's face yesterday.

If we train with Beth Tweddle, we will make the Olympics. That is the lesson of Jennifer Pinches.

"I liked the BBC fluff. No Al Trautwig to make racist remarks. They kiss pony's ass like its gold."-Uschi Keszler

British fluff on Miss Gabby Douglas.

The BBC is informing us about the stats of the Uneven Bars...it is very reminiscent of Josh Tesh's event final fluffs from Atlanta...minus the cheese and funky chickens. 'Front handspring, front handspring double front barani out...it is harder to say and even harder to do."

Will Beth go for the 7.1 or go all out? I hope she goes all out with the 7.3 like a total boss.

"That jacket isn't gaudy enough to be Italian."-Shannon Miller's Hair Bow on Morandi on the rostrum

Imogen says that Beth knows what to do...which is good considering Imogen is not much of an event finalist.

I don't know if I can handle crying Brits if Beth doesn't medal. They are all so sweet and Hermione-like.

Reliving the Beth finals routine from Beijing...her execution has certainly improved. There are those who will claim that she was robbed, yet I see so many little deductions throughout that I believe the result was fair.

Are the Brits jinxing Beth like we all jinxed Maroney...or are they appeasing the Gods by hoping for, 'a medal?'

The 1928 Olympics were boycotted? You learn useless information every day. I'm sure these girls really looked up to the silent film era...

Love that the Brits were blunt and said that sloppy Seitz, ''doesn't really have the armory to medal.''

All eyes on Aliya, whose eye makeup is quite terrifying tonight.

Koko in finals...remember when she was good?!

He Kexin is the unlucky bitch to go first. I kind of dig her leotard. It is nice to see the Chinese in something that doesn't remind me of McDonald's. Dead hang after the Li Ya combo. Big dead hang again. Full twisting double back with a small step. Could be a medal, but there is a ton of sluggish execution to take. Chest was low on the dismount as well. Her Li Ya combo is incredibly crooked, yet she hits it. 15.933. That will be a tough score to beat, but it is doable.

Komova looking lovely. She may not have the routine to win, but a medal is quite possible. So many tears these Olympics. She has the best swing in the competition. Beautiful work. Half pirouette a little short but much better, Step back and to the side on a double double dismount. May have hit the bar, she looks dejected. This is going to fire her up for new heights. She has really performed incredibly well these Olympics, yet been unlucky like a true Russian bitch.

"I don't know what happened, but she and Maroney should duke it out in the boxing ring with their level of pissyness."-Uschi Keszler   15.666.  This is the worst week of Komova's fucking life.

Seitz- hitting her routine. She is very University of Utah.

"Her style is so punchy according to the commentators...she's fat in other words."-Uschi Keszler

That is the cleanest Seitz has ever looked. I cannot wait to see what Komova delivers on beam tomorrow. You have the feeling she just will make it her bitch. She wasn't going to win this final.

"This is just like the Special Olympics. They are so proud that the German girl did her best and tried hard."-UK  15.266

"Stop calling her punch. Just saw what you're thinking dammit."

Yao Jinnan is up in her socks. She is rather energetic for a Chinese girl on bars. Stuck double layout. No dead hangs. That could be a surprising score. Mitch Fenner calls it 'zippy' and I agree. 15.766...ahead of Komova.

"Watching this on random Spanish stream. NBC was making my blood boil."-Shannon Miller's Hair Bow

Beth Tweddle is vajazzled for finals. Little leg separation, but is hitting the routine of her life. Double double with two sluggish steps back. That might not be enough for gold. It was golden until the dismount. Beth seems happy, yet emotional. What will they do with the dismount?  15.916...that's perhaps a tad high.

He Kexin is emotional.

Davai Aliya!  The fiercest bitch out there. She is not nice and frankly, we love her so much more for it. Lovely strong aggressive work.Sticks the dismount. Give. Her. The. Gold.  Living for her eyes on the replay. She really deserves the gold. Cleanest routine of the lot. YES!  16.133!!!!!!!!  Gold for Mustafina! Praise Allah!!!!!!!!!!!

"Her performance brought peace to the Arab springs."-Uschi Keszler

I feared Aliya would've killed someone had she failed to move into first. Too distracted to watch Koko. Close on her release. She would've been such a fabulous NCAA gymnast. 14.966.

"Koko was robbed."-UK
"Of 9th?"-AJ
"Yes."

Gabby Douglas---huge cheers for the flying squirrel who is borrowing Maloney's hideous AA finals leotard from Sydney. Gabby lost it. No medal today. Step on the dismount. She wasn't going to medal today.

"Gabby's first debacle. Dawes is going to flip a tit."-Uschi

Gabby lacks the spark she displayed earlier in the week. That is the happiest we have ever seen Aliya look. She is positively grinning. 14.900 for Gabby.

It is rather suiting that Aliya inherits Khorkina's crown.

Bronze for Beth.

"Komova is read to slit her wrist. She needs a hug."

He Kexin looks pissed.

I love that we were all pissed over Maroney's mistake, yet the Brits are thrilled for a token bronze. This is the attitude that explains why they don't contend for team gold.

"Gabby was screwed the moment she put on that leotard. No one wins a gold medal wearing her gay clubbing outfit."

And now they've brought in Rohene Ward for the celebration.

  5. Yeah NBC's coverage is about a routine behind what is happening live, not to mention those annoying commercials. I have Adblock on Chrome but for some reason the stream won't work on Chrome but is working in IE... The one thing I will say that's good about the NBC stream is that it's great quality.

  6. AJ your good link isn't helping. It just takes me to a screen with a bunch of channels. I have no idea what to choose. I clicked on the two BBC channels (1 and 2) and didn't get a video. :-( I guess I'll have to suck it up and watch NBC. Ugh. On another note, so happy for the Brazilian!

So so happy for Aliya and Beth! The Russian ladies have been on the podium every time so far, and finally a GOLD!!

    4. I'm even happier for He Kexin and tweddle. Mustafina is a bitch....you can tell by looking at her face. And she's muslim? No wonder. I'd rather see athletes with a good attitude win the gold...but bad things happen once in a while right?

  14. Great bar final, especially in contrast to that appalling vault final. Mustafina earned that gold in so many ways. They got the right podium. Komova is gutted, and despite those who are speculating that she'll come out on fire, I think that she is a long shot for gold even with a hit routine. After seeing Sandy get the the gold on vault with her craptastic performance, there's no way Ponor isn't going to own beam.

  16. Feel bad for Komova, hitting her foot. The judges were ready to put her ahead of Kexin since I'm sure that 0.3 got paired up with at least a 0.1 (since every deduction has a reason). I knew Mustafina would win if she hit. She went after Beth as the only other gymnast to score over a 16 on UB and her execution is on another level compared to Beth's. Beth is lucky for Bronze, IMO. Even with Komova's mistakes and Jinnan's D deficit, her Handstands nad piroettes are so bad that in any other country they'd have been enough to put her under both of them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yea Beth's form is pretty terrible....she can't hit her handstands or pirouettes to save her life. She would be more fit for mens gymnastics where you can get away with it more easily and can throw more "crazy" release moves.

  18. Russia on track for their medal predictions. Prior to the games they said they aim for 2 of each medals. So far they have 2 silvers, 2 bronze and 1 gold ( WAG and MAG). So I think they are happy with this meet, compared to Beijing it's a turn around for their program.
Hope Afan and Komova medal tomorrow. Bitchtastic Russians forever!

    1. Russia won 2 bronze in 2008. and in mens. compared to 2008 it is like Russia is Russia and not Brazil or France

  19. lol at Gabby being dead last, but she already won AA so that's ok. Komova needs to hit on beam tomorrow; poor child needs gold. And Tweddle's groin looks so weird in the picture above.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Poor Vika. Such gorgeous bars. Her look after she was finished was priceless though; she was so over it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Anonymous 7:28 AM: Ponor's TF beam score IIRC was lower than Vika's AA beam score with two sizeable wobbles (though that phase seemed overscored, since Douglas got a 15.5 with all sorts of bobbles in her routine), so I don't think Ponor is a lock for gold. She isn't nearly as stable as she was in Athens, but if she does hit like that, she has a 75% chance of winning just due to the fact that she doens't leave much to doubt in her hit routines (she has better rhythm than most and her connections are faultless when she's on). It's all about the switch ring and double turn for her, and whether or not she goes for the full-in dismount.

For Komova it's all about that first connection series, which she has never really hit, her arabian, and her dismount (I can't even watch the dismount, I feel like I'm going to die everytime someone does that skill). If only she gave a shit about the VT landing in the AA and took only one step. She'd have won the AA and wouldn't have to depend on inconsistent events like Beam to try to rectify her Olympic experience (which has been fabulous by normal standards, but tragic by Russian standards - as Produnova)...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. True, especially since Komova's so hard on herself. Ugh she really needs to hit tomorrow. Grishina is still the most tragic of everyone in the team tbh.

      Delete
    2. She has hardly linked any of the skills in her full turn with leg up, front aerial, back tuck, sheep combo throughout the games. She'll need to link them all for a shot. The judges have been lenient towards her so far, but are likely to be more conservative in EF.

      Delete
    3. I understand that. That is why I said Ponor has a great shot because her connections are faultless when she's on, and Komova's chances for gold hinge on her ability connect her skills and not WOBBLE on her acro (oh, and land her dismount with less than 0.3 in deductions).

    4. komova will fall 6 times off beam

Or maybe ecstatic He Kexin lost clearly after beating her on a tie break in Beijing. But then again it was her own fault for not pulling her legs closer together on that DISGUSTING dismount...

  24. I am pleased that Komova's boring bar routine did not luck out this time. Definitely she's no Nastia. Aliya. however, kept alive the Khorkina tradition that the best revenge is beating a 12 year old Chinese gymnast and seeing your American conqueror not medal.

  26. As for the low standards of the British, they haven't had anyone to batter them into the ring since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. They need another iron lady to give them a good kick in the pants. In the days of Thatcher, Torvil and Dean rolled over all the Russians. Now they just hope for vijazzled bronzes.

But seriously, I admire Beth and this is a well deserved Olympic medal. It is a disappointment, but it's better than what she got the last two tries.

  27. Over/under on Tim, Elfi, and/or Al slyly rubbing in Gabby's lackluster performance and somehow using it to discredit her AA win (i.e. slyly creating the tone that her win was a fluke)?

Shannon and the Dominques bombed AA after winning team gold. Shushonova and MLR bombed EFs after winning AA. McKayla bombed yesterday after nailing the vault of her life in the team competition. Gabby has plenty of company.

  29. I am really happy for Beth Tweddle, to win any medal in front of a home crowd must be rewarding. I know she was so disappointed at the last Olympics. Thanks for hanging in the last 4 years.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Us Brits aren't as soft as you think, there is genuine disappointment that we didn't come away from EF with two golds as we qualified top for two. The first time we have ever been in this position before. Gymnastics is getting serious over here, we've come away from these games with both team in TF which never happened, and four EF when our previous best was one EF. Add the four medals won to that and hopefully our intention is clear. I believe that there will be at least one British gold in Rio, most likely MAG, but the girls will follow.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The team GB girls have so much potential, but you see how bloodthirsty you have to be to get gold. I'm not calling any of the athletes soft, least of all Beth. I'm just pointing out that the British public is a bit nice, and a bit overly satisfied with bronzes. It's very nice, the GB gymnasts have always been held back a bit in the medals game by the air of complacency-- mostly among the fans-- with just being there.

I think Beth proved over and over that you British gymnasts should be a force. She performed like a champion even when the judges thought she was fish and chips. She went for every opportunity she had in gymnastics-- on floor and all around, and a bronze at 27 speaks for itself. Staying in shape on bars for that long is inspirational.

Watch out Rio. Perhaps Nastia will come back and do a Beth.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The British public may be satisfied with the bronzes, I think largely due to their perception being that British gymnasts don't win medals. To the four year fans, we don't. Those of us in British gymnastics are pleased, but believe me we are not satisfied ; )

    ReplyDelete
  33. Komova definitely had a shot of winning gold in my opinion. She had the same start value as mustafina and tweddle and her form on bars definitely surpasses tweddles'. Komova's bars scores have been around 15.8 the whole time whilst mustafina's have travelled from 15.6 to 16.1.....with mustafina's set looking pretty damn similar throughout the whole gymnastics competition. with that being said though, mustafina definitely deserved the gold in the bars EF. devastating for komova though...that 0.5 foot hit along with all the other deductions the judges decide to pull on would have surely gotten her on the podium.
