The Chellsie Memmel Comeback

The first member of the 2008 Olympic Team coming back to show up at a competition in a leotard during this latest round of comebacks.  You have to start somewhere.

Chellsie is certainly jumping back into competition early.  Maybe she just isn't as vain as the rest of us?

Interview with Chellsie Memmel:

  1. I LOVE COMEBACKS! This is a better beam routine than most of the girls on the National team already. I was never a big fan, but I hope to see her at Nationals!

  2. this comeback seems legit. It's only January and she's already doing decent level skills... pretty much what Sloan showed up with on Vault and Beam at Nationals last year. Her key, as usual, will be staying healthy. Her bar routine will be most important, probably.

  3. Slimming down and getting in shape will be very important. Most gymnasts of her caliber wouldn't show up to a meet that out of shape. It is impressive that she an still do everything while clearly needing to drop some pounds.

  4. I'd rather her get in shape the right way, slowly, instead of the crash dieting with fruit-chicken-fruit.

Gymnastics is clearly in her blood. I love how nobody even knew she was training... I wonder how long it's even been. I feel like she'll be able to do double pikes off beam when she's 40. lol

  5. I'm hoping this is a bad camera angle. Kudos on the skillz though!

  6. "I'm sure Marta wouldn't approve of my current training schedule" LOL. Chellsie knowns herself well and she knows the odds are with her if she a) stays healthy and b)ups her bars to a 7 start value. She's a smart cookie. Got love her grit and determination. I'm sure by Visas she'll have dropped 5lbs (hopefully gotten a tan) and polished her routines. Super excited for her.

  8. there were some surprisingly candid comments from Chellsie in there. She's not going to win herself any points with Marta! Good for her.

That's certainly a serviceable vault if she does intend to do 3 events at Classics and nationals. Beam has a lot of potential, not quite there, but potential, and love that she still is doing the illusion.

Now, if only we could see bars.

and one thing she does not need: a tan. PLEASE NO! Naturally pale is naturally beautiful, no need to be oompa-loompa orange like everyone else on the national team.

  9. I liked the followup to the Marta comment -- "I would like to stay healthy, so I'm gonna stay on this training plan"

Massive hint to Marta: maybe let your gymnasts listen to their bodies, and maybe they won't break at the Olympics.

  10. "I liked the followup to the Marta comment -- "I would like to stay healthy, so I'm gonna stay on this training plan""

Oh yes, me too. It sounds like she wants to avoid camps right now to stay healthy and train how it best suits her. Good for her.

And I like how she said "low 6s on bars aren't going to cut it". I'm assuming the painfully obvious US weakness on bars is really driving her and Nastia at this point.

  11. I admire her determination and grit but I think she needs to be doing WAY more conditioning and less of skills. I don't know what her eating habits are but if shes back to her old chicken and fruit diet in hopes of losing weight, then I'm very disappointed. Consult a Dietitian!

  12. she said she's doing every other day of gymnastics and the other days conditioning. I think that's a good starting plan and she seems to think so as well. As her dad said, these little competitions are good for her participate in to get that fire going again. And it will make it easier to feel comfortable at Nationals.

  13. I have to say I liked Chellsie before... I Love HER MORE for sticking to her guns and coming back on her own time scale..its a start shes not there yet but she doesnt need to be...would love to see bars and a few more skills on beam and the yurchenko double. Shes smart not to push because yeah shes still out of shape :)

  14. I swear she actually looks smaller than she did at the Olympics! Re: the maybe she's not so vain - she was also (excluding ASac) the only Olympian competing with an adult body, Nastia might have been not so young in 2008 but she hadn't been belted with the puberty stick either. Perhaps Chellsie is just used to being the size she is (which is not big for a non-gymnast)so leo's don't worry her?

  15. ya! rooting for chellsie, just because chelsea tourism could always use a boost. plus, i think she's always understood rivalry can be healthy and that raising the bar will make national competitors stronger. she is the definition of team power player.

  16. I find it refreshing that she will actually show us something-- Wisconsin cottage cheese and all-- as opposed to constantly tweeting about her potential comeback. But honey if you're really all about the team, revisiting that DTY ain't the way to help...

  17. I've always loved the no-bullshit attitude of the Memmel's. They don't feel the need to put on a dog and pony show for the interviewer or answer with the typical empty and generic Disney-fied responses that so many other girls resort to. It's refreshingly sincere.

  18. I was never a fan of her gymnastics, but wow. I love that she not only has the humility to go out there in what she probably considers to be "poor" condition, at a low-level meet, in order to start a comeback. Not to mention sticking it to Marta a little bit. Nastia would NEVER come back to this small of a meet, and even if she did, she be butt-kissing Marta all the way.

  19. This chick is Chuck Norris' sister!

  20. "Nastia would NEVER come back to this small of a meet"

    That's political savvy, cupcake.

  21. Chellsie's an athlete who comes alive during competition, I think she and her dad decided to use this rinky dink meet for her to get fired up and motivated. Nastia clearly wants to stay hidden away from the public until she feels ready. As a matter of savvy Nastia and Chellsie did stage a mini comeback in 2009 at Nationals and neither of them looked that great that year so...yeah. (they were probably doing it to get National Team Status and money)

Her beam was very similar to the one she did in 2009. As she said there's no need to pounding her body to death until she's in great shape. I don't doubt she could get her Arabian and barani back when she's closer to competiton. It sounds like she finally training smart which is what her body needs.

  22. well her gymnastics is as fugly as ever, and now she looks out of shape on top of it. Score.
