Favorite Things: БОЛЕРО

In Mother Russia, skater hunks and fierce ballerinas converged on a most beautiful reality program.  Judged by the legendary (and opinionated) Tamara Moskvina, this show was yet another reason to commit to our Black Swan Fitness DVD.

The most fantastic performance to my favorite song of the season.

The Beautiful Evgenia Obraztsova and Maxim Staviski

Natalia Osipova and Roman Kostomarov

Irina Perren and Peter Tchernyshev  (It was about time Peter found a suitable partner.)

Molodets, Alexei.  Molodets.

Natalia Somova and Maxim Marinin

  1. So glad that more people will see this great show!! Absolutely loved Marinin and Tchernyshev (and their partners Somova and Perren) on this show. Osipova is always astounding. Thanks for posting.

  2. By the way, in case anyone is interested, other judges included Tatiana Navka and the legendary Vladimir Vasiliev.

  3. AJ you missed the best one of all, the Assasin's Tango music from movie Mr and Mrs Smith. It is actually not a piece especially choreographed for the show. The choreographer Yuri Smekalov did this piece 3 yrs ago and he himself danced it with Obraztsova when he entered it in choreographer category under Moscow Ballet Competition, and he calls this piece " Parting". Smekalov is himself a Second Soloist and budding choreographer at Mariinsky.

Obraztsova got paired in Bolero program with Stavisky, who is not the best partner. But they are both really good in Parting. Mainly Genia Obraztsova saves the day.

  4. I agree with above, that number was one of my top 5 favorites from Bolero. Zhenya is absolutely fierce in the assassin's tango. Love her (and so happy she is now a principal at the Bolshoi).
And I actually didn't know this had been previously choreographed, interesting.

Another tango I loved was by Somova and Marinin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odJ8EB6za0k (skip to 1:24 for dance or just watch them be delightful)

  6. Yagudin/Kretova were not my favorites on the show and it was kind of bullshit that they won over Somova/Marinin, Perren/ Tchernyshev and Osipova/Kostomarov but one of the dances they did that I liked a lot was this dance inspired by Romeo and Juliet, specifically the war between the Montague and Capulet clans. Music is great too.

  7. Aunt Joyce, just want to say you are a very talented writer/blogger and I really miss not being able to read your wonderful insights on a regular basis.

I even enjoy reading your posts about disciplines that I have no interest in! Your spin on them draws me in.

    Anyway, thanks for sharing!
