Why Yu-Na Kim Should Compete at Four Continents...

It is difficult to shake off the rust after time away. Her ability to do a Triple Flip+Triple Toe after falling and popping earlier in the program is impressive and commendable, but it looks like she has a bit of a way to go to truly be back in her rhythm in terms of competition. One has to be all in at this level and it may take competing like she has never won anything before (Grand Prix, Four Continents) for Yu-Na Kim to truly make it back to the top.

YNK scored a 64.97 for her effort in the short program.

  1. Ok,Yuna CAN'T compete at Four Continents because other members of the national team are gonna compete at it and it was decided a few months earlier.

  2. Keep in mind that the rink was -4 degrees C. Less than ideal for both skater and ice conditions. Though, I hope this isn't the sign of things to come in the free skate ...

  3. The rink has zero heating. Which is pretty much what Yuna has said about all her practice rinks in Korea. Ughhhhh. So cold.

  4. I agree. thank for your concern. If Korean fed wants it, she could compete at 4CC. I don't want her to repeat 2011 worlds.

  5. Please, 2011 Euro also was held in a freaking cold stadium. A result is a result. Yuna also made no excuse for the low temperature in the interview.

  6. The audience cheered her single lutz--LOL!

    1. Her fans cheer her every move. Have you watched any of her shows? She glides and strikes a pose--the crowd cheers. She does an Ina Bauer, they scream. She pops a jump, they still scream. Very enthusiastic and supportive fans.

    2. LOL! - As if the haterz weren't cheering right along with them. Come on admit it! It made MANY people a little bit happy inside for about 5 seconds. Too bad, she came back immediately with a 3F3T that turned any smirk into a frown.

  7. Absolutely agree but she won't. I'm already ready to see deza vu 2011world. It seems like any one of her team is thinking about the reason why she gets so nervous even at national. Stupid team yuna (including her)

  8. I hope Yuna team listen to the voice of reason.

If Yuna repeat the today's sp in worlds, will they still praise her adding 3f-3t after popping lutz?

  9. I remember reading about how Shen and Zhao and other Chinese skaters had to practice outdoors, in sub-freezing weather. I doubt if a cold indoor rink caused Yu Na to stumble during simple stroking.

    1. I doubt Shen and Zhao were wearing what she was wearing during their outdoor practice.

It is unfair to measure up to the Chinese anyway. They are among the toughest people on earth. Have you not seen those Shaolin monks who were able to train topless while bathing underneath freezing waterfalls in the middle of winter? Or break knife blades with their bare teeth? Or how about standing upright on a spear point single footed while arm lift 4 babies up and down just for fun? Hardly the same condition as the Toronto CC where the toughest thing is Yuna's mother.

    2. Poor Yu Na, freezing out there in an indoor rink! Seriously, the excuses made for her are ridiculous. Worse than her fall was the popped lutz. Good thing she tried to correct it on the next jump, but I don't think trying to correct a mistake--actually two mistakes--is that praiseworthy. Under the old system, she would have gotten around a 5.4 for tech--maybe less. But it's a new day and mistake ridden performances can now be called glorious.

  10. Is this Michelle Kwan? Has she retired?

  11. I heard that the figure skating environment in Korea is terrible. There is no figure skating rink and even Yuna had to practise in an amusement park until she got sponsors and moved to Canada. Actually I watched a short video about the story on Youtube. Here's a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9FFlpnpZNE

  12. I honestly think there was so much pressure on her and Yuna has not done well in competitions in Korea (GPF 2008 for example) and she's skated long enough not to be influenced THAT much by the coldness. She just needs more time getting used to the competitions. I definitely agree that she should compete at 4CC and I really thought she would when she initially announced her comeback but looks like that's not happening.

  13. She is way overscored as usual. This performance shouldn't get any higher than 58. It is really disgusting just how much judges prop her up. I for one, am very glad she will not participate at 4CC. This way, we are spared of seeing her ugly face and poor performance. I hope and pray that Kim falls multiple times and have massive problems with her performance at 2013 Worlds so that she will be placed lower than top ten rankings. Guess that is probably what will happen anyways with her annoying half-assed approach to the competitions.

    1. I pray that you get cancer and never recover- that way the world is spared of your ugly abbreviated existence and would surely be a far better place for everyone else.

  14. That was a little depressing, like watching Mirai's performances last year as if she just REALLY did not want to be out there on the ice at all.

I like YuNa, hope she gets her Mojo back for the LP.

  15. Yuna promised to work as the ambassader for the Winter Special Olympics 2013 in Korea which happens around the same time as 4CC. She also clearly stated that her aim for this Worlds is getting multiple olympic tickets for Korea.

The Korean Federetaion promised to give those 3 girls tickets for 4CC at the Ranking Competition last November. If one of them should be replaced by Yuna, it will be vastly unfair to the girl who may or may not be given the same opportunity next time. The Federation would not break the rule.

Yuna and the Korean Federation set the goals for this season, made promises, agreed on the terms, and have been following the plan accordingly. Not everyone will like the plan, but their determination deserves a respect.

    1. She is not retired. She is a competitor. Most important thing to her is to participate in the competition. She should put those ambassador things away for a while.

Those 3 girls for 4cc cannot be competitors anyway. I just wanna know the points of their season's best. probably around 100 points?
No other feds deal with the things that way.

    2. It is too bad Yuna didn't learn her lessons from the last worlds she competed two years ago. But what can you do? At least the positive outcome from her misjudgement is that this opens the door for the other ladies to overcome her and hopefully we will have a competition in which the winner doesn't win by 30+ point difference. I always thought it was so wrong that Yuna won by a mile when the point difference shouldn't have been that big.

    3. I'm the original poster.

      For the first reply:

In Korea, they regard the official ambassador work very seriously. Having the Winter Special Olympics in the country is a huge honor to the Korean people. She is doing the best to help the olympic movement in her capacity. Of course it is tough to joggle between two duties. Some compromises should be made.

About the 4CC selection: Did you forget which male skaters US sent for 2011 Worlds? They selected 1-2-3 at their national, even though their rulebook allowed some leniency. By the way, all three girls passed the TES minimum requirement for 4CC. In my opinion, this is already quite achievement and enough to declare them as competitors.

      For the second reply:

I think Yuna learned her lessons from the last worlds. Her primary goal at this worlds is getting tickets for Sochi, which is quite realistic even though she is not in her Vancouver shape yet. She did not say her goal this year is becoming a world champion again.

  16. Yuna just did a squeaky clean free skate and scored 145 points. The freak fall yesterday in the SP was a fluke, I think.

    1. Lol at her outrageous overscore! Do you honestly think she'll get such high score in the Worlds? Not even a chance. You need to subtract at least 25 points from this stupidly high number.

      Delete
    2. If Yuna does the same at the Worlds, she will get 140+, guaranteed. This is at least 10 points better than Miki's LP at the 2011 worlds (no 3/3, one mistake), which got 130.

    4. I'm Korean, and I'm sorry about i can not speak English well.

Scores tend to differ from the 2011 World Championships.
      pcs is continued inflation,
Would you like to compare scores with other skaters in 12-13? Gpf winner mao asada, received 130 points with three kinds of triple jumps. What do you think about it?

  17. Wow!!! I just saw her FS. As British commentator said before, she is ''Enigmatic''. But, I stick to my opinion. She needs to compete with real rivals before worlds. I want to watch her masterpieces at fake-London.
