A Word to Clueless Gymnasts...

When you're a fifteen-year-old level 10 who looks like a normal teenager and doesn't have a Kayla Williams vault or He Kexin bar routine, you're not going elite or to the Olympics. It isn't still a possible goal. You would've been pushed ahead at age five. You didn't push McKayla Maroney with your Yurchenko Full. And the only place being Sam Shapiro's sister is getting you is a ticket to the emergency room when you try to learn a new skill out of the pit. Otherwise, I love your lines...

And lose the gum on camera.

  1. How about a word to clueless Olympic champion platform divers. You are not going to compete in Rio in diving and "vaulting". Has anyone else heard David Boudia talking about this? I don't think he understands how gymnastics works. A one event athlete would never even get looked at. Plus the scheduling would never work out to train for both sports let alone make it to both comnpetitions. I would be amazed if he ever mastered the technique of even a handspring double front or tsuk double full. Which is not even enough to be considered a vault specialist.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this because I'm actually quite annoyed by the stupidity of even suggesting he thinks this is possible.

  2. I just thought Awwwwww look at you with no idea at all what it takes to be an elite gymnast. Hopefully for his diving career he'll never try to find out, as it'll likely mean the end of that too when he lands headfirst on the floor instead of the water.

  3. Brandie Jay is an unusual example of someone hitting her stride later in age..My daughters competed with her in Region 3 and as a freshman in High school she didn't do so very well at J.O.s at all and then 2years later she wins the all around and vault and then 3 years later she is on the national team..it was a remarkable late blooming of talent..good luck to her as a GymDwag!

  5. Mean post, AJ. You can do better than picking apart a 15 year old girl's aspirations. And who knows, she could certainly go elite. The Olympics is another story, but what is she supposed to say? That she doesn't aspire to the Olympics - what kid doesn't aspire to be in the Olympics?

    1. Agreed. Nasty, unnecessarily sh*tty tone (especially that crack about "if you look normal"--i.e., he's saying she's too fat). Part of what she's saying is to be polite and answer the journalist's questions in a positive manner. I'm sure she knows much better than anyone on THIS journal exactly what her realistic chances are.

  6. It sounds like you have some kind of vendetta against this kid. I don't think she is clueless. I think she probably knows as much as anyone about the hell an elite gymnast experiences having witnessed it first hand through growing up at AOGC with her sister and her sister's teammate, Mattie Larson. Give the kid a break. She's just answering lame questions from an interviewer - I'm sure she was not expecting to be interviewed. She should lose the gum though.

  7. As someone astutely pointed out, she looks like Robert Shapiro is her grandfather.

  8. Dave Boudia is way way way more delusional than Nicole Shapiro. Nicole just said it might happen, she was humoring the reporter vs saying "the chances of me competing elite are about as good as my sister getting through an elite meet without breaking herself"
