Anna Li Trains Bars

Note that she was kicked off the team due to not hitting in podium training after days off. The coaches voted not to use her today. Transparency and the digital age are not the friends of old world political systems.

  1. Ugh, to drop her for such an average bars worker is really disgusting. Anna's last blog post was heartbreaking.

  2. YEAH, I actually don't understand why now, when they are only 5 on the team, they still don't use her...

  3. Occupy Worlds!!! hahahahah

  4. I am so ready for Marta to go.

  5. Any chance of that line-up changing

  6. That is so weird- even a Li routine with a mess up would score better than a hit Vega, wouldn't it? Doesn't Marta want to win or what.

  7. If anything, I'm glad this video has been making the rounds on the internet. It's embarrassing for USA gymnastics that she isn't in the line-up.

  8. That's exactly what this video is for USAG @Anon 11:44. Embarrassing. She should receive a lot of backlash if the lineup doesn't work out. Vega on bars lmao. What a joke

  9. Um, Vega was struggling during podium training and even when she *hits* she's only so-so on bars. After watching this I'm just befuddled as to why Marta & Co. wouldn't put her in TF line-up. She's obviously ready and has a great SV. Even with a mistake she'd do better than a mediocre Vega. Someone please explain why they're keeping Li off of TFs. Too many weird conspiracy theories going on in my head!

  10. Well, at least she knows she has a lot of support and she has this routine to always remember from the world championships. Plus if they win she will be a world champion, if they loose, marta will look like a huge ass for screwing her over.

  11. What a vile way to express your feelings on the matter Anon @12:54

I'm more of a casual viewer and don't know too much about the political games...what are the theories? The two I've heard are they want Alicia to surpass Shannon Miller in world medals, and Marta doesn't see Anna as useful now that Queen Nastia is presumably making good progress, and chose to trial by fire Vega instead.

Or that Marta doesn't trust Anna enough to let her debut for team USA as bar anchor in TF...but then she is trusting Vega and Douglas (even if it is a last resort).

Are there other political reasons for leaving Li off the roster and out of the bars line-up?

  12. Anon @12:54 or... the post above me! I couldn't agree more! This Worlds has been a mess. Shawn should have been flown in & Anna should have been placed on the team the second after A.Sac went down. And Vega should have stayed the alternate. While I am not, and have not been drinking the Anna Li kool-aid. I'm almost hoping Vega flubs up so USAG & Marta can take some heat for this!

After reading her blog post I can't help but feel bad for Anna. She should be proud she got this far, not many people could say the they have. I think after everything she should have gotten her shot! But it's like diss after diss with this poor girl. First they didn't add her to the wallpaper, then she was never named the alternate and became one (according to Geddert & I think USAG FB.. don't feel like checking it). Her blog post was heart breaking.

  13. Li has crap handstands, is nursing an injury and was inconsistent at Nats and at podiums. She has not done what she needed to do to make the team.

P.s. Shawn would help this team on UB and BB. She scores better than Vega.

  14. Anon @1:14

Aunt Joyce said it best, "...It doesn't sound like Vega has been hitting, but all is well when your coach is Teodora."

  15. I am so mad. Poor Anna. What an elegant, gracious young woman to handle this completely unfair situation with such dignity. And she absolutely, absolutely deserves to be in the third spot for TF. Not a question. What is going on with USAG? I really cannot imagine what they are thinking. :(I liked her before, but now I am officially Team Anna.

  16. Nastia doesn't really have a say. The coaches ultimately vote on the lineup.

  17. THE ORIGINAL ALTERNATE WAS GABBY, NOT SABRINA. Marta, Anna, and John Geddert have all mentioned this publicly. Sabrina was going to do bars all along in the lineup. Once Anna missed her routine in Podium Training, she was replaced by Gabby, NOT Sabrina. For some reason, Marta wanted Sabrina and McKayla to do AA, and so there was no room for Anna to go back into the bars lineup once she kept hitting her bar set (like in this video). The saddest part for me is that Marta never had any intentions of competing both Anna and Gabby on bars, which may have really helped us. What was she thinking? I hope Russia wins. I'm just so fed up with the Marta mindgames.

  18. There is a saying if aint broke done fix. This is a team finals. Vega was used in prelims and did well. The judges know her now. If they used Anna Li this is her first time and she would be competing with an injury which could break down during her routine. Martha and the national coaches made the right decision

  19. I live for the oblivious commenter at 3:13 who doesn't get how the rules with alternates work.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Some truth to what Anon @3:20 PM says. Looking up at the individual match-ups for the 3up 3 count, that is, scores for the 3 competitors for USA v Russia in qualifications, USA has the edge. Sure, its a new day, new competition, but even with Vega in, Team USA is likely ahead of Russia even if everyone improves, hits, etc.

Too bad for Li though, likely her last international assignment. Must suck to finally be ready and have the coaches vote for Vega. But well do they really vote? Marta has said that (re Larson's FX at 2010 Worlds). But in John Geddart's twitter or facebook he mentions being surprised at the TF line-up. So um, does that mean he was out voted or had no choice in the matter?

    ReplyDelete
  21. First off I definitely think that Li should be competing over Vega. It's a no brainer to put up a vet for this kind of competition.

The only (Marta) logic here (if such a thing exists) is that she is trying to get a more seasoned team for next year. So, she is assuming she won't have Li for 2012, but will have Vega in which case she wants her to have some extra pressure on her before she competes in an Olympics.

But based on that hit bar set I'd take Anna on my team ANY day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. For Li it's too much too late. she had to be ON @ nationals at camp & podium training. 3 chances to prove herself & she failed. Couldn't get through a routine. So will ya all quit being so emotional! 3 up 3 count Consistency rules over difficulty.

    ReplyDelete
  23. and those who think Anna can't handle pressure obviously have not been to a NCAA Super Six finals. While it seems more minor, it's not. I agree a missed Anna routine is still better than a hit Vega routine.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anna Li is not a vet. She has never competed as an elite.

Stop acting like this is soem injustice. That is the FIRST bar routine she has hot since she got to Japan.

She messed up every other time she tried it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Marta is leaving Alicia on the team to screw Shannon Miller. She wants Shannon's name erased from the record books and has openly bragged about this in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've been to NCAA Super Six finals, World Championships and Olympic Games. I have to disagree with lizzypoo96. Super six in no way compares to either Worlds or Olympics--plus, you still drop a score with 6 gymnasts competing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. The difficulty is watered down at NCAAs. When Li raised her difficulty, her consistency shit the bed.

    2. Gonna have a hard time making this video argue that Li is getting screwed, given we just saw the last video from podium training where she totally missed.

    3. Shawn got screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Who the hell wants to see Shawn blob her way through bars? Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That whole blog with Anna Li approving all the messages from people saying Marta was wrong (and not the reverse) is a protest. Pretty fricking stupid too. Li is borderline. She doesn't need to be pissing off the HBIC. She can go pack sand with VaZam.

Shawn is going to go rock a 60 at Pan Ams...you heard it here first, peeps.

  30. @Anonymous 6.05 p.m.
    Excuse me?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Does anyone else think the whole Alicia scoring more medals than Shannon Miller is really f'd up? Would you want to count a medal that you got when you were injured and didn't even compete or contribute to the win? I don't really think that's the reason behind the whole Anna Li debacle (that Marta wanted to screw Miller), but it's weird that it's out there as a possibility. From my perspective as a 90's fan, I remember Miller as actually competing for and winning all of her medals, so what is this lame mentality that Asac surpasses her by being getting medals by being "named" to a team who earned a medal she didn't contribute to? I hate the whole American mentality of success by "signing up". And yes, I'm American.

    ReplyDelete
  32. While I agree it's BS to leave Li hanging around, I don't see how this video "and the digital age are not the friends of old world political systems."

It obviously isn't stopping her. Just like none of the coaches are.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm torn about Anna. Clearly she is the class of the U.S. team on bars-when she hits. But the above video during training is really perhaps the first time she's nailed her routine. She looked shaky at best in other training and podium sessions. And as she is nursing a strained stomache muscle. Scary scenario to put her up in TF with an injury even if not apparently that severe.

    @Anonymous 6:14PM ITA.

ABomb has always struck me as very strange. I think there's something creepy about him. I've always gotten weird vibes from him the way he goes on about young male gymnasts. It seems inappropriate for a grown man.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So, I'm confused. Did Anna get her own medal or was she just receiving Alicia's?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Li is a vet because she is older and has more competitions under her belt, versus Vega. I would expect her to be more mentally prepared than a 16 year old.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anna may be a vet in NCAA standards but that's where it ends. I agree with Anono at 5:05. Marta needs you to hit. She hasn't when it counts. Because of injuries to Bross, Caquatto and Memmel Anna got a gift of being on the World Team. She should be happy she was even the alternate. Alternates do not get a medal. That was Alicia's and she had to give it back.
