This and That

The Chinese are deep into winter training.  Cheng Fei, yang Yilin and He Ning are all training together.

A few days ago, videos emerged on youtube declaring that the Japanese NTV secretly taped Yu-Na Kim training in LA.  All That Sports has issued a statement asking for an apology and says it will blame NTV if Yu-Na is unable to compete.  (One article initially had a statement that they would blame NTV if Yu-Na failed to win Worlds.  It was a possible mistranslation, but they probably would blame them anyway.) NTV is not believed to have captured Yu-Na training either of her programs.  Realistically, there isn't much the Japanese could change at this point by knowing Yu-Na's programs.  Assuming her jump layout is relatively the same, they cannot add too many new combinations.  Most of their skaters are likely already attempting the most difficult content they are currently capable of handling.  Given how the Japanese value honor, this is another rather amusing tale of the JSF/Japanese media being shady.  One can only imagine that this goes on with both the Korean and Japanese federations, as they are highly competitive in the ladies field.  The paranoia and Yu-Na-mania is entertaining and should be considered downright flattering for the Olympic Champion.

Holiday Festival On Ice captured Canada's fancy this holiday season.  A few highlights from the mini-tour:

Amanda Evora and Jeremy Barrett are engaged.

Dubreil and Lauzon announced the birth of their daughter, Billie-Rose, on Dec. 24th.  Billie-Rose weighed six pounds, 12 ounces.

The Canadian Press named Joannie Rochette Female Athlete of the Year for 2010.

Anna Li was featured on Gymnast's Flashback Interviews.

Shannon Miller was also interviewed about her wins at Nationals.  She spoke about actually planning her petitioning onto the '96 Olympic Team.  It is nice to know that Shannon and Steve even strategized about which meet they'd petition.  She certainly had experience with the process.

  1. Cheng Fei is back!? Wow.

I love the Yu-Na stuff. The attention is great for skating, and I hope she doesn't take the weird Korea/Japanese media frenzy too seriously!

  2. The Japanese filiming was wrong, but ATS's spin on how this will hurt Yu-Na's performane at Worlds is just LOL-worthy.

  4. NTV is the same broadcasting company that aired the judging process of a figure skating judge at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In 2006, three NTV reporters were caught trying to break-in David Beckham’s house in Madrid, Spain.
They tried to climb over the neighboring fence with digital cameras in hand, but were caught by the security guards that spotted them on the security cameras.

The security guard called out “Stop. Don’t move” while pointing a gun.
The three held up their hands and identified themselves as reporters of a Japanese TV broadcasting company.
Beckham was at practice and not home at that time but his wife Victoria and their youngest son, then 1 year old, had to leave for their safety.

Secretly filming someone without their consent is a crime.
If NTV has on-ice footage of Yuna that they did not air, they should discard it at once.

Whether their true intentions were to simply get a scoop, spying to get information on Yuna’s new programs and training methods,
or to add psychological pressure, we shall never know.

    One thing is clear.
It is a low act that goes against media ethics and sportsmanship as well.

  9. yes, right! ATS never said they will blame NTV if Yuna fails to win worlds. You got the point wrong.

  10. Joyce, I am sorry but there's one thing that should be corrected about ATS's comment. They said if this event present an obstacle to Kim taking part in the world championships in Tokyo next March, Nippon TV will have to take full responsibility. They have never mentioned about winning in any point of view.
I kindly ask you to correct it, please.

  11. “If NTV repeats such actions, we will ban them from all future interviews and press conferences related to Kim.
Also, if this effects Kim’s preparation for the World Championships, or in the case Kim cannot skate at Worlds, we will hold NTV fully responsible,” said ATS.

  12. don't all the top chinese girls train together?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Aunt Joyce, as Eugene noted above, ATS' press release did not mention anything about Yuna failing to win at 2011 WC as a result of NTV's idiotic act. You should really correct your statement.

    ReplyDelete
  14. just to give you further information about the issue, Yuna's agency never said it would blame NTV if she does not win at the worlds. It said that it would blame NTV if Yuna decides not to participate at the worlds after knowing the secret filming.
also, i am afraid that you are getting the wrong point about this whole issue; the main point of this issue is that NTV "secretly filmed" Yuan's training footage, not whether or not she would skip the worlds.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Every human being should be protected from a planned effort by a 'broadcastin company' to film one's daily life secretely. It is unexcusable and detestable, period. ATS should go strong to protect its athlete(s) and to prevent similar attempts in the future.

As often mentioned, figure skating is as much mental as physical. Considering that the World Chapmpionship will be held in Japan, one of the most powerful figure skating sponsoring nations in the world, considering the sensitive relationship between Korea and Japan, fair play is critical. The Japanese broadcasting company has distastefully crossed the line.

  16. Joyce, I don't particularly care for the word "paranoia" but after 2008WC, 2008COC, and 2009GPF(among other things), it's not too hard to understand the level of sensitivity among Yuna fans.

One more things, it's Japan V Korea in figure skating, it's Yuna V Japan in figure skating.

  17. Sorry I meant to say it's NOT Japan V Korea.

  21. NTV is so rude and horrible:( I just hope everything is going well.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think the main point of this whole issue is japanese broadcasting company secretly taped Kim's private life, NOT whether Kim is gonna skip worlds or not.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why did ATS just issue a warning? One shouldn't just ask a chronic stalker not to stalk again, let alone consider it "flattering". Should seek to get a restraining order.

  33. It just makes me laugh to recall how absolutely nuts the Japanese media and JSF went for an incident where Asada was taken a photo by a hotel bell boy while she was waiting for her team to arrive at a Korean hotel about a year ago. A picture perfect example of Japanese two-faced dual standard... always so generous and forgiving to their own faults and so outspoken about others' mistakes. Disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "Given how the Japanese value honor..." Where does this 'Karate-kid' stuff come from? Since you are generalizing, only if you knew about these people well enough to realize just how excellent they are at backstabbing.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If I remember correctly, the same Nihon TV program crew once broke into David Beckham's home in Madrid to take a video of him in 2006. Beckham's bodyguards almost shot them with their handguns, taking them as kidnappers.

  36. I find it funny people are calling ATS too sensitive and over reacting.

People forget Japanese NTV is actually NHK of the NHK Trophy championships. In otherwords, Japanese main national network like the NBC. This is not some third rated cable or tabloid show.

If they consider this type of converted privacy and rule breaking reporting is ethical and acceptable, God knows what they will come up next in the weeks/months leading up to March?

By targeting and single out a rival competitor in a foreign country so blatantly in a stalkish manner during the Japanese Nationals, it is not that hard to consider act to be distracting and antagonise their main rival.

Can you imagine the Russia NBC pull this shit to Michelle Kwan in the months/weeks leading up to WC? The world would be in flames already.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Is the world championship broadcasted by NHK?

    ReplyDelete

  40. "The paranoia and Yu-Na-mania is entertaining and should be considered downright flattering for the Olympic Champion" I can't agree with you more. It can be flattering for Yuna, the best skater of all time.

That said, Japanese stocking & duplicity is really disgusting. Even when they smile, they prepare a knife for backstabbing. My teachr of sociology said this duplicity like 'Light'and 'Darkness' is one of Japanese characteristic, and never trust their smile or deep bow in front of you.

  48. 48 comments? Over nothing? Obviously YuNa's rink needs better security. NTV shouldn't be filming private training. ATS and thier over the top response is fanning the flames. ATS really needs some savvy PR types to manage the YuNa stories. I have no horse in this race (don't have a favorite between YuNa or Mao) but ATS again comes up looking like amateaur hour. They mishandled the coaching change, and now this. They are good at putting on ice shows, but lousy at PR.

  51. this ntv program even filmed the JUDGES during the olympics.
Can u imagine that they PROUDLY showed their hidden camrea things about judges on TV.
Maybe they wanted to check if the judges w/ jap money do the right job for them or not.
and after everything was over, the ntv staff followed the judge and asked why mao got low points (was it low???). the judge answered mao's jump was not good w/ angry voice. That’s what the jap tv do w/o a shame..

And this program’s staff got arrested for trying to filming Beckham ‘s house.
Victoria was scared and Beckham was very upset at that time.

Sadly Jap media don’t realize what they do.
    even until now...

    ReplyDelete
  53. funny how post like this bring out the Yuna bashers continuing to bash with little attempt to address the issues at hand.

I suppose Yuna should just stay quiet and let NTV continue to violate her basic human rights and walk all over her.

Problem is, it is her today, what about tomorrow, Alyssa? Mirai? Rachel? Mao? How about the girls changing room with a zoomed lens from a public building across the street? Or hidden camera record of them having a bad day and private conversations? If you think things like this doesn't affect someone's psychological well being, you clearly need a sensitive chip!

    ReplyDelete
  54. => that's really sad for other skaters like ando miki, innit? she did a clean long program many times but can't touch ppl's heart and even match yuna's so-so program.
cos they are not in the same league.

if yuna only focus on her jumps and change her jump layout to easier jumps like many other skaters do nowadays and then we can see her clean programs more often but i guess that's not what we really want to expect from her.
    cheers.

cos we all saw their programs already and they are in commercials!!! right?
and secretly filming and stalking will affect nothing to japanes skaters as someone said.
(i guess u already forgot how japanese fed. and tv,newspapers, japanese ppl acted when a hotel staff put short video clips about mao on his blog. actually he was too excited to see her and put cute comments about mao w/ the vid. was it too dangerous? lol
Korean fed had to make an apology for that. -_-
but NTV flew to the USA ON PURPOSE. this was not like yuna came across the NTV cameraman by chance.)

Following the video, NTV even made a phone call to the company that yuna ordered her boots and found out she recently ordered new boots and her boots got slightly narrowed. and they visited the restaurant and showed what yuna ate and mentioned yuna really liked it even she asked doggybag on her leftover.
    How creepy is that?
but still NTV is normal, others are overeacting.
cos yuna’s program will be the same and japanese skaters jump layout will be the same? lol

  85. In a new article released on Dec. 29th, 2010, NTV expressed their thoughts on this situation.

"It's not a problem (about filming Kim) because it was done in a public space. We also explained it thoroughly to Kim's people and reached an understanding," said NTV in Sports Nippon, a Japanese newspaper specializing in sports.

While NTV said “We have worked everything out,” ATS denied these claims saying, “This is not true.”

“NTV has yet to apologize, and they certainly did not request any assistance from us (to film Kim) beforehand.

On the day of the filming, some of the rink employees at the site spotted a suspicious filming crew. They asked the crew what company they were affiliated with but the crew did not answer and turned back.

We can assume that they secretly filmed footage of Kim even after the staff told them to leave" said ATS.

SEOUL, South Korea -- The management agency representing figure skater Kim Yu-na is demanding an on-air apology from a Japanese network for broadcasting footage of the Olympic champion training in California.
All That Sports has accused NTV of airing footage of Kim shot secretly during a training session in Los Angeles. Director Koo Hee-sung said Thursday that the agency sent NTV a formal letter of complaint demanding an apology.
NTV could not immediately be reached for comment.
Kim won the gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics earlier this year, but lost the world title to longtime Japanese rival Mao Asada at the world championships a month later.
Kim and Asada are expected to face off again at the next worlds in Tokyo in March.

  95. NTV secretly videotaped an athlete, a young athlete who is on the national team of another country.
That footage was aired on national television without the prior consent or knowledge of the athlete. Approximately 20 million viewers watched that program.
The broadcasting company has yet to release an official apology to Yu-Na Kim, the victim of this offense. Instead, they released a false explanation to their own national media.

If NTV is acquitted from this wrongdoing without submitting an official apology, there is reason to believe that they will continue to infringe on the privacy and the safety of our athletes, regardless of nationality.

  97. Can't blame NTV for unwilling to apologize. NTV may not even know why it shouldn't have done this. Secret cam is a part of Japanese culture, so it is well-accepted in Japan. Apparently, the only times they encounter problems is when they try to stalk and tape international stars. Got away with stalking Oda Nobunari or Miki Ando without any backlashes. NTV really should keep it domestic.

  98. Wow, these comments are hilarious. Kim Yu-Na is 20 years old, a legal adult, and has more credentials (Olympic gold medalist, millionaire, spokesperson, UN Goodwill Ambassador) than you, me & 99% of us will achieve in our entire lifetimes. Combined. A Japanese tabloid TV crew tapes & airs a tiny part of her workout, and people freak out on her behalf? Awesome.

Yes, the rink is public, not private. If you have money, you can do anything from skate in public sessions to renting out the whole place for a birthday party.
    http://www.eastwesticepalace.com/info.html

Yes, she is training in Los Angeles, an international center of entertainment media, including tabloid media. No, it's not illegal to take a camera somewhere and tape something and air it on Japanese television. Besides, Kim Yu-Na is not hidden away in some delicate mountain village secretly training while sleeping in an sensory deprivation chamber at night.

If you think a short NTV video clip of her stretching & working on a small sequence is going to affect and somehow damage and terrorize her, you have no respect for Yu-Na as a competitive athlete and media icon. If it does affect her at all, she needs to work on that, pronto.

  101. Whoever said using the term "jap" is like using the n-word towards black people....

Let me tell you something. Caucasians used the n-word to oppress, discriminate, and make African Americans look inferior to them.
Japanese people attacked, oppressed, killed, discriminated several Asian countries including China, Korea, Taiwan, etc in early 20th century....Hell, they even attacked the mighty United States.

People don't use the term "jap" because of pure hate and racism like the n-word. they use it because Japanese people do some nasty shit to other people and still think it's ok.

But yeah it's offensive to Japanese people. so try not to use it everybody.......

  107. NTV made mistakes, and should be blamed. Since the Japanese media are always so sensitive with Korea, I don't think NTV's intension was to hurt Yuna. They wanted to to praise Yuna for her strategies for getting prepared for Worlds, comparing with Mao. Yuna shuts out media, trains hard, and skips GPS, while Mao keeps getting exposure to the media, trains hard, but not succeeding in the GPS. NTV broadcasted this at the same time another channel was showing the National ladies freeskating. NTV wished Mao would fail at nationals, and claim Yuna and Korea is much more clever. But what was unfortunate for NTV, was that Mao made a comeback, and got the ticket to Worlds. NTV does not have televising rights for Worlds, so it's obvious they don't want Worlds to get high audience ratings. It doesn't mean that would justify NTV's behavings though. They did no good for anybody.

  109. I never had scantiest knowledge or impression of korean before they run riot all over skating blogs around the world, but now I am fully informed of their nastiness, viciousness and irrational temper easy to be agitated.
What in the world are they doing even when a potential war is approaching on the horizon? They should rather be preparing emergency packs in case they have to kill each other.

Yes I definitely think so because all the people except Korean are civilized and well-educated enough to avoid words like that.
And as an American of Indian descent who has been to Korea and other Asian countries, I can definitely tell that Korean are the most hideous racists in the world. They literally insulted me saying that I was from 'inferior race' to my face. Even worse, Korean call Japanese/Chinese 'yellow monkey'. So, what do they think they are? Caucasians? It seems that Korean have no mirrors in their country.
