Lighting The Candle: The Third Night

Lighting up our lives for years now, Natalie Portman is already the subject of intense Oscar buzz for her performance in Black Swan.   For years, Natalie Portman has embarked on being a "serious actress."  On screen and off, it seems that she always speaks in way that lets us know she's smarter than the rest of us.  Maybe she is?

The Russian-Israeli actress always has a way of enchanting our darkest sensibilities.  Closer, Garden State, V For Vendetta, Natalie Hershlag may very well the coolest bitch in Hollywood.  More than a mere actress, Natalie is a scholar and quietly determined to make her mark in history.  It takes a certain breed to star in The Diary of Anne Frank and publish about Photosynthesis in scientific journals before becoming a student at Harvard.

Choosing Black Swan may have been the greatest decision of her career.

Natalie Portman + Winona Ryder + Mila Kunis+ Swan Lake + Dance Movie + Lesbian Psycho Thriller + Anorexia + Mental Illness + Director of Requiem For A Dream = Happy Hanukkah to US!!!

  1. I still think she peaked at 13 (Leon and Beautiful Girls were her standout performances still to this day), but I can't wait to see Black Swan. She's been getting universally praised reviews. Looking forward to it.

  7. I watched her on Letterman. She came across as about as down to earth, charismatic, and likeable as the Olson twins do in interviews.

I enjoyed her shite line readings in Star Wars.

  8. I will see the film this weekend but have already read NY Mag and NYer reviews. Both reviews say the film portray ballerinas from a fetishist viewpoint. The film's director has recently said interviews that both wrestlers and ballerinas are similar because they both abuse their bodies. Don't know about wrestling but as someone who spent most of her life in the ballet and dance world, this cannot be further from the truth.

A dancer, especially the ballerina, treats her body as a precious instrument without which she cannot express her art. Contrary to popular belief, most ballerinas are not anorexic nor do they have eating disorders. I and many other dancers and former dancers have unusual eating habits like eating small meals or not eating at certain times of day, but nothing approaching eating disorders.

Now, as far as Natalie Portman being believable as a ballerina. In real life she probably would have a hard time making principal in major U.S. companies like ABT or a more non-classical company like NYCB Ballet due to her petite size. American ballet companies favor taller principals so petite principals are the exception rather than the norm. I do have to say that Natalie does have nice, average proportions for a dancer's body, I definitely think she can portray a ballerina onscreen.

Winona Ryder however, I mean what? She's so not believable as a ballerina, with the combination of square shoulders, hunched back, and short neck, are you kidding me?

  9. With the number of ballerinas turned actress working in Hollywood (Mia Wachowski, Summer Glau, Zoe Saldana) it's a little odd none of them were cast in the film. But oh well I bow down to the awesome Jewish power in the film.

  10. I have trouble believing Anonymous 1:47 has really spent most of his/her life in the world of ballet. "Have a hard time making principal..." What?? That's an understatement if there ever was one. Portman is an actress not a dancer! I think someone is confused about what the standards are to enter an American ballet company. As far as the eating and abusing one's body comments, see sentence above.

  12. and comparing her to the olson twins is very unfair...those pieces of trash who do nothing but party and take drugs

natalie can come off a bit smug sometimes but she's a good girl who has a brain and went to harvard when she could've just coasted off of her millions. she seems nice and all I know is she's extremely pro gay rights so can't be that bad
