Shawn Johnson Training Vid

Shawn Johnson's comeback continues and she has posted a video of her progress. The Gold Medalist is considerably taller, but she looks to already be adjusting her technique. Shawn looks to be upgrading her series to a bhs+bhs+layout full, which could very well be the new skill she tweeted about. The comeback video is just a start. Shawn is still not in the shape she needs to be in, but it is definitely a starting point. The added depth will be quite welcome by the national staff, as will her balance beam prowess and competitive stability.

  1. What month did she tear her ACL? Considering that injury, I'm very pleased to see her looking so good so far. I don't care for Shawn's gymnastics, but she's very talented and I am wishing her the best in this comeback. I really think it's a great thing. I wonder how tall she is? Probably 5'0" or less.

  2. She is very talented...but what is with the t-shirt and capris...no one works out in a loose t-shirt..she had to keep retucking it in..she isnt' that out of shape that she has to wear something to hide in? She looks great, good luck to her!

  3. Looking at this video in late Sept 2010 given that she's only been fully training for 2-3 months? I can only imagine the progress she'll make by Feb 2011, let alone by July's Classics/Nationals 2011...if she keeps this up she'll definitely give the other girls a run for their money.

  4. I was surprised that she was adjusting so well to her new height. Unlike Alicia or Nastia she never competed as an adult so I thought it would be a bigger adjustment.

  5. SJ is a super talented kid. She is an Olympic gold medalist training less then anyone else, so I am not surprised that she is back on track so soon, even with the new height. The most exciting thing was her bars because that is where her new height will be the hardest to get used to. Except that that it show her knee is getting better the tramp and floor stuff isn't as exciting. She can do a lot of that will little to no training.

  6. it will be very interesting to see what comes of this. i have a feeling that either she's going to get injured (probably her back) or she won't be able to throw enough difficulty (more likely). that being said, i am always suspicious of "training" videos for a gymnast's comeback. shawn's already proven she's a total media whore.

personally, i think shawn's height is going to be a big issue on beam. she was already a long tumbler, so add her new height to the equation, and you have a serious problem.

  7. How tall is she? She was 4'9" in '08. If she's a few inches taller, it's really not that big of a deal. It's not like she's 5'4" like Nastia or something and has to spend weeks relearning giant swings. I think she'll be able to fit on the beam. I don't know if she will get enough difficulty on the other events, but it's worth a shot. Comebacks are admirable. I think she could potentially be useful on beam and floor.

  8. Other than bars I don't see a place where Shawn won't be able to get enough difficulty..assuming she gets back all the skills she competed in '08

  9. I think that part of Shawn's prodigy is that she is a very quick learner. She just knows how to make adjustments very quickly so she didn't ned as many reps as other athletes.
