Kayla Williams retires from elite competition

Catty here, with breaking news that Kayla Williams, reigning 2009 World Champion on vault, has decided to stop competing elite. While Kayla was training well according to our OCD icon MLT, she tore a plantar fascia tendon a couple of weeks ago, putting 2010 Visa Championships in jeopardy. Between missing that meet and missing 3 months of training this year just looking for a gym, it made defending her world title in 2010 almost impossible. Or maybe she was just tired of sitting in the splits all of the time.

Read all about it here, and act shocked that they broke the news to IG2 instead of Luan... I mean USAG.

The article says Kayla could be at Alabama as soon as next summer, and start competing for the Tide in January 2012.

In the meantime, she may have the most illustrious career ever for someone who only competed elite for 4 meets spanning what, 7 months?

  2. I am not too surprised really.. I mean, she is a great vaulter but the rest was "ok" and maybe she found elite training just too much in the end. I wish her the best of luck in her future though.

  4. Wonder what Jay thinks about this. A year & 1/2 before she enrolls at UGA. Thats a long time. Can't see her continuing to train hard between now & then. Lots of time to lose skills and gain weight.

  5. except she's committed to Alabama, and she'll be starting college in about 12 months. So I don't think she really cares what Jay Clark thinks.

  6. A year and a half of weight gain before going to Bama. Just enough time for her to attain the perfect Bama body. Genius.

  8. there's a year and a half until the 2011-2012 competitive season starts. She'll be at Alabama no later than August 2011, possibly as early as June 2011.

I'm no fan of Kayla, MLT, or 'Bama, but if you're going to talk smack, at least have the facts right. otherwise, you just look like an idiot. An idiot who is too chickenshit to sign your name to your posts.

  10. Please.... she quit when she saw A-sac at classics, she knows she wasn't gonna make worlds.

  11. What if Alicia tore her ACL, MCL, & PCL tommorrow (God forbid)? Would Kayla "unretire"?

  12. I think seeing a 22-year-old potentially kick her ass (and knock her off the vault queen throne) scared the crap out of Kayla. It's not like she has other events to fall back on.

  13. Somewhere in West Virginia, Bozhi and Hrabrina are laughing their a--- off. Maybe Kayla should have learned that you dance with the one who brung you.

  14. Kayla knew that Martha hated her and only sent her to Worlds last year because they were guaranteed a medal. Martha never liked her and when Martha doesn't like you...she makes it quite obvious. Then she had the issues, didn't train and put on weight. It isn't like this should be some big shock.

I must say that I am impressed that MLT was able to finish off the career of a beast in a matter of mere weeks. If only we sent Jana to CGA back in '05.

  15. Her whole situation where she couldn't even find a gym to train in for several months at a time was bizarre. Then she goes to MLT and she injures her foot almost immediately (surprise).

Might as well just do NCAA.

  16. I am so glad Kayla has a plan that makes her happy. She is a great, great kid. What a huge amount of unhappy stress she's been under. I am no Bama fan, but I'm happy Kayla has it to look forward to.
