A Word From Russian Spies

According to Russian spies stalking the facebook of Ksenia Afanasyeva, Viktoria Komova and Maria Paseka successfully completed 2 1/2 "screws" at the final Russian internal test.  It does not appear that Aliya Mustafina has her Amanar back, as it surely would've been mentioned.

  1. Also from Russian spies (in the gym) - the only one "truly healthy" is Inshina. Make of that what you will.

    1. When are gymnasts ever truly healthy?!

  2. Might as well gamble and have them both throw Amanars in TF even with so few numbers in competition. We'll see how they go in Prelims. At least Alexandrov recognizes that a "kitchen sink approach" is the only way to go.

    1. Yes, it's a fabulous idea to 'throw' skills at the Olympics. I mean Olympic gold is all that matters right, who cares if these girls break their necks?

I also heard Gabby is going to throw a TTY during AA and Ponor a double double off beam.

If Komova can land her vault consistently while training at the Olympics then I say by all means have her compete it. But if she is crashing them during training and prelims, then a clean double rather than a knee busting amanar is the way to go

    2. "then a clean double rather than a knee busting amanar is the way to go"

Too bad no one will tell that to Raisman to stop her from doing that offensive looking "Amanar". Judges need to severely penalize horrible form and under-rotation to keep these girls from popping their knees. Make it worth it to do a great DTY rather than risk a poorly done Amanar.

    3. IMO "Amanar-mania" is about more than just vault, it's about the relative difficulty of distinguishing yourself from the pack on the other three apparatus, esp BB and FX. Think about it, if you want to up your UB D-score, you'd better be prepared to learn a LOT of new skills/combos, and those take time (not to mention you may not be physically capable of some of them anyway, depending on your build/shoulder flexibility). 0.7 on BB? You'd better be darn sure you're going to connect a bunch of stuff WITHOUT falling off AND that the judges are going to credit it every time. That's a gamble. And if you wanna go from 5.8 to 6.5 (or 6.0 to 6.7, whatever) in a year? Fuhgeddabout it. Whereas on VT, a little adrenaline, a wing and a prayer and BAM, +0.7. THAT is the problem, not that the Amanar is overvalued. But the FIG is probably not smart enough to realize that.

    4. ^^ Oops, meant "from 5.8-6.5" on FX in a year.

    5. The amanar should not be downgraded next quad, Maroney earns every bit of that 6.5 start value. What needs to happen instead is the judges distinguishing the types of amanars.

Great ones like Maroney's need to be rewarded more than she is getting. I agree with the 16s she's been getting lately because she's been taking that huge step, but at worlds TF last year it really truly deserved a 16.3-16.4

Then you have someone like Jordyn, when she lands the vault well (America Cup 2012 for example) deserves a good score, 15.8-15.9

Mustafina, Nabieva and Raisman get 15.5s-15.7s for their amanars. They should in no way be within .5 from Maroney. Some of them are truly scary and the judges seem to turn a blind eye. The need to start rewarding the great and punishing the scary

    6. agreed right there. I judge up to level 10s here and we would be required to deduct SO much on that last group in terms of leg form, early twisting, completion of twist... so why is it "ok" at the elite level?

  3. I am not familiar with Paseka, so I looked up some videos from this year. I don't see how she could possibly get an Amanar around, at least safely. Her technique on the DTY is truly terrible. I suspect her Amanar looks something like Raisman's. Same with Afanasyeva, who has similar form issues.

If Raisman could only get a 15.3 at USA nationals with the typical score inflation there, she and anybody who chucks a comparable Amanar should get eviscerated and possibly downgraded by the judges in London, especially compared to Maroney and the lower class of good-but-not-Maroney Amanars currently being competed, like Wieber's (and even Gabby, if she hits).

I think there'll be quite a bit of shuffling and downgrading to DTYs in the vault lineup between prelims and finals, once everything has been scored correctly in qualifications. Komova's the only Russian I trust to not kill herself on this vault.
