Marlie Music News

This is a few days old, but Marlie announced their music for this season.  It was updated on their Ice Network profile, but there hasn't been an article about their programs just yet.

SD: 'Batacudas' by Mitoka Samba, 'Life Is A Carnival' by Various Artists, and 'On The Floor' by Jennifer Lopez.

FD:  'La Strada' by Nino Rota

Like many of you, I am simultaneously excited and worried for Marlie's short dance.  It is difficult to imagine Meryl Davis going J Lo on us.  I can't even imagine Meryl Davis sipping wine and going J Lo, let alone defending her world title. Meryl probably doesn't even allow herself to consume those wasted calories.   I felt similarly excited and nervous about Virtue and Moir's Samba, but that program wound up being a gem that just needed more competition time.  If Marina Zueva isn't fucking with them, the program could take them to the next level.  They need to work on chemistry and sex appeal.  In my mind, Meryl will sport a high ponytail and shimmery dress that will have us all dying.  She better give us some face.  I imagine Charlie will exhibit better hips than the ultra-tight and toolish Scott Moir.  Tessa's dress was necessary to block him from view.  Marlie have been able to take risks in the past, but they weren't at the top yet.  Last year's programs were complex, but lacked the magic of the previous year.  This could be back what we need for Marlie Mania to continue.  By continually pushing themselves out of their comfort zone, they may just become the legendary team many believe them capable of.

Meryl and Charlie's free dance should be classic Marlie.  The music is grand and continues Meryl's love affair with all things Italian.  It should be very grand and the music will help them to have a romantic feel.  Perhaps they'll learn to act in love this season.  Tanith should teach Meryl how to clutch a letter to her chest and bleed love.

  1. Marlie will won next OG - for sure! They will be so much better in latin dance, then Voirs, who didnt show latin character at all.
Do you know something about Voirs programs? Or this two affraid and will not compete anymore? How they could thinking about gold untill Marlie will compete :)

  2. I'm not really worried. I mean, they pulled off an Indian dance brilliantly... This should be fine.

I think they're chemistry would improve if he was single. But he's obviously not (thanks, Tanith). And they're not great actors. Still, I think their chemistry is better than most.

  5. Love the music but Takahashi just did a great La Strada program in '10.

Wish skaters were a little more careful about reusing the same pieces of music over and over...

  7. Anon 10:56 Voir didn't show Latin character at all? I must have watched a different program. Tessa's Cuban motion was spot on!

  8. I think, AJ, that your love for Meryl has blinded you to D/W's faults. They have great speed, they can do difficult stuff, but their ability to convincingly skate anything but the patented high-drama POTO style programs just isn't there and I suspect never will be. I am sure their fans will scream "the Indian OD" - you know what? That one worked because of the choreo and the concept, not the performers. Normally I am all for dance teams trying different styles, but since D/W will get super-high marks no matter what, I would suggest they stick to their strengths and not torture skating fans.

I agree witht he commenter who suggested that Takahashi's La Strada, though in a different discipline, was special enough that other skaters should steer clear of the music for a while.

And someone get Meryl some carbs. Even Cathy Cambridge looks big in comparison.

  9. AJ has been open about Marlie not having great chemistry. He had an entire post devoted to their tango's lack of sex. Meryl and Charlie really performed the Bollywood program well and added their own sparkle. Have to disagree on most of your thoughts @1:14 AM.

  10. AJ- thank you for your blogs.
Please, tell us something about Voirs future plans and music for next season. Who will win music buttle this time? :)

  12. So excited and so happy for these music choices. Marlie showed that they can be steamy with the Tango last year, lets see more of that "get a room" action with the SD and a grand, dramatic, passionate, beautiful FD that will allow Meryl and I to continue our love affair with all things italian.

  13. La Strada, hmm? I look forward to seeing their version of it, but IIRC, there was an American team, Summersett and Gilles (yes, that Gilles family) who had a charming FD to it a few years back. I'm probably in the minority, but I actually loved their Tom Dickson choreographed program, it had some great moments in it.

  14. I loved S/G's version of La Strada! They had a great OD that season as well. Here's the FD to La Strada on youtube

  15. Virtue and Moir aren't a couple either, yet they manage to smolder on the ice. Either you have that or you don't. You can't teach it and you can't manufacture it.

  16. Actually you can--at least to a certain degree--teach it. If I were S/Z I'd ship Charlie off to an acting class and pronto. I wish someone would have a good long sitdown with that boy and show him how to project emotion. It isn't that hard to do--once you get over your fear of being OTT and looking stupid. Funny thing is, once you do, you don't look stupid at all.

On the other hand, Marlie as interview subjects continue to impress me. Whether their answers are canned or not, they always come across as such classy people. Kudos to their parents.

Oh and it's WONDERFUL to have you back AJ.

Preach. AJ, I have no doubts that Meryl can bring on the JLo. If you look closely at the tango FD, I think she really got it. It's Charlie that I worry about. His inability to feign the slightest interest in Meryl is starting to cost them - it nearly did last season. This year's short dance will be the ultimate test and there is no doubt Voir will be smokin.
