This and That

The return of Debi Thomas!

Danell Leyva won the Valeri Liukin Invitational.  Sasha Artemev warmed up prior to the meet but didn't feel ready to compete.

Phil Hersh wrote an explosive blog entry about Alissa Czisny and Rachael Flatt.  Of course, he threw in a comment about Sasha Cohen.  His sentiments are likely correct, though the Flatt Camp likely won't appreciate hearing them.

Khokhlova and Andreev debuted at Golden Spin.  Jana and Fedor have a ton of potential, but need much more training time in order to develop unison, his comfortability with dance skills, etc.  Fedor is an absolute vision and it is great to see Jana skate without any trite over-acting.  Marina Zueva is spending time with Jana and Fedor in Russia as they prepare for Russian Nationals.

Evan Lysacek spoke to Lifeskate about his work with Ferrero Chocolate.

Peng Peng Lee won Elite Canada.  This was Peng Peng's first major competition in two years.  She competed at the Tour Selection only doing a back full for her first tumbling pass.

Victoria Moors won the Junior Division at Elite Canada after being out an injury.

  1. I was lucky enough to see Debi in person at Worlds in Cinci: while I wouldn't expect the same level* given history and other legitimate activities intervening, it was still nice to see her again.

(*no, it wasn't- no where near the speed/strength (though the arena here was comparatively small), & she's now taken some pages from Katarina's stand-and-prance book for this performance)

  2. Sounds like Lee went through hell with her old coaches. They were most effective at producing back injuries. Glad she got away from them

  3. I refuse to click on the link to Phil's column. I WANT to like the guy because he writes about skating, but it's at the point where I can't support him anymore. I don't even like Flatt, but if Hersh wants to write an "explosive column" about her for doing poorly at this competition, I refuse to read it. You can bet Phil wouldn't write an "explosive column" about his favorite football or baseball player after they have a bad game. He wouldn't have the nerve to, and he would realize how dumb he was acting.

  5. Debi Thomas has guts. She is a 44 year old mother who spent most of the last 20 years becoming or working as a surgeon, and now she wants to comeback? Not an easy goal. She is dealing with injury pain, so this performance is stronger than I expected.
